The Malaysian Consultative Council of Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism and Taoism (MCCBCHST)refers to a project organised by the Islamic Information and Services Foundation under which one million copies of the Quran will be produced and translated into Tamil, Chinese, English and Malay to be distributed to the public (STAR on 9/01/2015). Tun Dr. Mahathir who is the projects patron said it was aimed at lessening misconceptions and alleviating the fear of Islam amongst Non-Muslims. Dr. Mahathir further gave an example of "the verse that allowed Muslims to kill Non-Muslims only touched on one event in the history of Islam. It does not mean we are told to kill other people".

The reason and example advanced by Tun Dr Mahathir on the need to distribute the translated version of the Quran to the Non Muslims specifically does not make sense. It is Muslims who are indulging in killing and condemnation of other religions and religionist. Therefore, the need is for Muslims to be educated on the true teachings of Islam and not the Non Muslims.

Further, it appears that the purported ignorance of the Muslims is sought to be transferred to the Non-Muslims, to justify the distribution of copies of the Quran in Chinese, Tamil, etc. to the Non-Muslims. We have to emphasise that Non-Muslims have not carried out any acts of terrorism in the name of Islam and thus are not confused.

The actual intention thus appears to be to propagate the Islamic faith to the Non-Muslims under the guise of removing misconceptions of Islam.

The first objection to this is that the intended distribution of the translated Quran to Non Muslims is being done in bad faith as the main reason given to remove misconceptions does not hold water as the misconception is with the Muslims and not the Non-Muslims.

Muslims vehemently object to any exposure of Non-Muslim religions to them. They rely on Article 11(4) of the Federal Constitution which allows the State to restrict or control the propagation of any religious doctrine or belief among persons professing the religion of Islam.

Article 11(4) is supposed to be used as a shield by the Muslims. However, It cannot be used as a sword to oppress the others or to propagate their faith to the Non-Muslims. The maxim "Do onto others, what you would have them do onto you" is apt. Nothing in Article 11(4) authorises Muslims to propagate their faith to the Non-Muslims.

Section 298A of the Penal Code makes it an offence for any person to "cause, or attempt to cause, or is likely to cause disharmony, disunity, or feelings of enmity, hatred or ill-will... on grounds of religion..." Thus, propagation of one's faith by inducements, other pretexts, etc. may amount to an offence under Section 298A.

Article 11(1) gives every person the right to profess and practise his religion. Therefore he has every right to reject the propagation of other faiths to him.

The following instances show that there is a concerted effort to persuade Non-Muslims to abandon their faith:

1. Various instances reported in the last few years about students in colleges and universities being converted to lslam.
2. A recent instance in Sabah where 69 natives were alleged to have been converted to Islam through deception.
3. Yayasan Pusat Hidayah (HCF), an Institution under the Prime Minister's Department has stated its objective as "mensasarkan untuk mendapatkan 3,000 mualaf tahun ini" (Free Malaysia Today on 18/7/14).
4. Multi-racial Reverted Muslims founded in 2010 by Firdaus Wong Wai Hung (Buddhist turned Muslim) distributed between 15,000 to 20,000 CD/s in Peninsular Malaysia last December just days before Christmas including one entitled "Jesus Christ in the Quran".
5. The Role of Jakim, Perkim and Jabatan Agama is well known. Jakim has an Annual Budget of about RM800 million.

In addition to the above, various inducements are provided for converts to Islam, although it is officially denied. For example, Section 29(1) of "Akta Pentadbiran Undang-Undang (Wilayah-Wilayah Persekutuan) 1993 provides that a registered mualaf (i.e - a person who has converted to Islam), "is entitled to receive assistance as determined by the Majlis as follows:

(a) conversion to Islam; (b) circumcision; (c) lbadah kit and (d) funeral expenses. Section 29(2), the mualaf may further apply for assistance for (a) living assistance (b) residential assistance (c) medical assistance (d) marriage assistance (e) for any form of education or training which the Majlis thinks necessary, including Islamic studies, academic and skills and (f) legal assistance". The Majlis has also discretion to provide any other necessary assistance which it deems necessary to the mualaf.

MCCBCHST is of the view that the intended distribution of the translated copies of the Quran to Non-Muslims is obnoxious as a similar right is not given to Non-Muslims. Further, the Quran being a Holy Book should not be distributed so freely as there may not be proper respect shown to it. Some Muslims may think that the possession by Non-Muslims of the translated copies of the Quran is blasphemous. What happens if the translated copies have words which have been forbidden for use by Non-Muslims by the various State Enactments?

MCCBCHST therefore, advise Non-Muslims not to accept the translated copies of the Quran. The Non-Muslims have every right to protect their religion and to alert their children and members of their family of the advances made by Islamic information and Services Foundation. Non Muslims have every right to practice their religion in peace and harmony as provided for in Article 3(1) of our Federal Constitution.

Article 3 (1) sates "Islam is the religion of the Federation; but other religions may be practised in peace and harmony in any part of the Federation.".

Exposing Taib Mahmud, Sovereign of Sarawak

I’ve been pondering Tun Taib Mahmud’s penchant for the colour yellow.

Yesterday I learned that Taib likes his buildings painted yellow and always wears something yellow – even if it be but his underwear. Yellow was the colour of royalty in India. Yellow became and remains the colour of royalty in the Peninsula. Does Taib have pretensions to royalty?

I thought of royalty because I had read news reports that the Conference of Rulers met this week. I wondered if timber was on their meeting agenda.

I wondered about timber because when Dr Mahathir (now Tun) began his mission to clip the wings of the royals, he revealed long-withheld information about the royals’ thirst for a share in the timber resources of Malaysia. According to Professor Mark Gillen of the Faculty of Law of the University of Victoria in Canada, the royal thirst for timber concessions was made public on 15^th and 18^th December 1992 by the New Straits Times and The Star newspapers.

I wondered about timber because that has been the route to riches for Taib – as documented in the meticulously researched book Money Logging: On the Trail of the Asian Timber Mafia by Dr. Lukas Straumann, a professional historian and Executive Director of the Switzerland based Bruno Manser Fund.

Money is in the title for a reason.

Taib’s wealth is enormous. On the occasion of 77 year old Taib’s elevation from Chief Minister to Governor of Sarawak, The Diplomat wrote this about Taib’s wealth:

“Pak Uban or the ‘white haired uncle’ – and his family have amassed a fortune worth $20 billion or more, and established business tentacles through 400 companies into the tiniest reaches of the state and around the world that will ensure his clan continues to thrive long after his retirement on Friday.”

The Constitution of Malaysia grants to state governments – not the Federal government, not the Sultans – the authority over land and natural resources. Thus the Chief Minister (Menteri Besar), the head of the state government, has the power to determine how land will be used and by whom.

Taib became Chief Minister in 1981, the year Dr Mahathir became Prime Minister. Dr M had many enemies in Umno, in the peninsula. The last thing he needed was a rebellion by the Sarawakians, the “fixed deposit” which kept him in office. Taib turned Mahathir’s insecurity to his advantage.

For a fee, Taib delivered the ‘Sarawak stability’ Mahathir needed. His fee was to reign unchecked, like an old-time royal.

A hallmark of Taib’s reign was his abolishment, in 1985, of the forestry ministry. He replaced it with the ministry of resources planning and appointed himself its head. This gave him the sole prerogative to grant concessions and plantation licenses.

Dr Straumann points out the result of Taib’s manoeuvre: “Exploitation of all of Sarawak – worth billions of dollars – depended on just one person, with no checks and balances, no transparency and no public accountability.” (Page 119)

As I said earlier, it is public knowledge that Taib and his family are worth USD 20 billion or more. Dr Straussman goes further: he names the companies which are the vessels of Taib’s wealth.

The first to appear in his list is Sakto real estate company (Canada, 1983) incorporated two years after Taib became Chief Minister; next is Sakti real estate company (California, 1987); then the reverse takeover of state construction company, Cahaya Mata Sarawak (1993); then Ridgeford Properties (London, 1996); then purchase of RHB bank, Malaysia’s fourth largest bank (2001).

The list and its webs and intrigues are long. Suffice to say that by 2011 “The Taib family had a financial interest in over 400 companies in 25 countries and offshore financial centres.” (Page 303)

The book reads like a thriller. Few readers will detect that it’s a translation of a work first published in German. I hope the publishers are working on a Malay translation.

The Federal government and the State legislature allowed Taib to act like a sovereign. He rewarded those who supported him. He punished those who did not. There are hordes of examples in the book. I’ll just mention one.

Taib turned against his Uncle Rahman Ya’kub, who had brought him into politics and had stepped into the role of Governor to make way for him. The extent of Taib’s vindictive agenda was displayed for all as an example of what would happen to anyone who would resist this Adelaide University trained lawyer.

This quote shows the climate of fear Taib created; it also exhibits Dr Straumann’s readable style:

“Taib was “aggrieved and hell-bent on taking revenge, and everyone has been particularly afraid of him since that time,” reports one of Rahman’s former golf partners. “Whenever Rahman appeared on the golf course in Miri, suddenly there was not a soul left to be seen there. Nobody wanted to be spotted by Taib’s spies on the golf course at the same time as Rahman.” Any business people who had had dealings with Rahman lost their public contracts and were shut out of lucrative deals. Politicians and civil servants suspected of supporting Taib’s uncle were side-lined. “In those days, I used to play golf with Rahman frequently, but in the end I had to stop. My son asked me to; he was afraid of losing his government job.”” (Page 121)

Money Logging is not only meticulously researched; it is thoughtful and comprehensive. It discusses the ridiculous projects spawned to consume the electricity to be generated by Taib’s dams. It describes the injustices done to the natives. It exposes many who contributed to Taib’s “success.”

Even the FBI of the USA and ministries of the Canadian government are implicated, as are banks and countries such as Hong Kong and China. Money Logging is as insightful and explosive a book as Malaysian Maverick: Mahathir Mohamad in Turbulent Times by Barry Wain.

The Rulers Conference is attended by the Rulers together with their Chief Ministers. I wonder if the man in yellow from Sarawak attended. I wonder what the Rulers and Chief Ministers think of Taib Mahmud. I hear Michael Douglas saying “Greed is good” and Edmund Burke saying “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” Who will prevail?

Dr Mahathir’s criticism not about Umno, but Putrajaya

COMMENTARY BY THE MALAYSIAN INSIDER

Datuk Seri Najib Razak is dead wrong. Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's stinging criticism against him two weeks ago and withdrawal of support for the prime minister is not an Umno matter, in the same way that corruption and vote-buying by Umno senior officials is not some quaint concept called money politics that should be dealt in-house.

The former prime minister's laundry list of complaints against Najib goes right to the core of governance of a country.

It has nothing to do with whether young talent is being allowed to flourish in feudal Umno, or whether the divisions have been conducting their annual meetings as required.

Dr Mahathir's criticism goes right to the heart of being a leader of Malaysia. In his view, the prime minister is weak, servile and blind to issues in the heart of most Malaysians.

For example, he says that Najib's manner of dishing out cash payments under the 1Malaysia People's Aid (BR1M) scheme only provides temporary relief but creates a dangerous culture of entitlement.

And, Dr Mahathir also points out that race and religious relations are at dangerous levels in Malaysia, and blames Najib's policies and inaction for this desperate state of affairs.

There is some irony here as Dr Mahathir is the patron of the Malay rights group Perkasa, which mushroomed after the 2008 elections and now flourishes with provocative racial rants under the Najib administration.

Then, there is the famous complaint about the administration allegedly being in the servitude of foreign governments and being prepared to sign a trade agreement not favourable to Malaysia.

These are serious allegations as they involve the well-being of the country, not a political party.

So, it is best the PM disabuse himself of this notion that the Dr Mahathir attack is some Umno matter. Malaysia is not Umno and Umno is not Malaysia.

Just saying, "We view this as an internal party matter and it will be dealt with accordingly and in the best possible way", will not take the sting out of Dr Mahathir's comments.

Najib and his government will have to address each point openly and not sweep it under the carpet as an internal party matter. After all, Dr Mahathir founded this new Umno, and knows better whether his criticism is about the party or the government.

This is not about Umno, or Dr Mahathir would have just quit the party again. This is about Malaysia. – August 30, 2014.

The Dr Maharthir vs Najib match is not over

The country is still reeling in and over Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s public expression that he is withdrawing his support for the number one leader of the nation.

Secondly, Mahathir’s public criticism over Najib Abdul Razak’s leadership is drawing in all kinds of interpretations that only go to demonstrate that this match-of-our-times is not over - even if the main stream media blanks out the news.

Now, Prime Minister Najib’s recent and first public responseto Mahathir’s assault is also seemingly not believable when he tried to douse the arrowed sparks by saying it is an internal party matter.

There are two issues here and the issues do not negate each other. How could our politicians be so naïve as to think that the citizens are not wary?

The key issue that makes Mahathir’s public outcry through his new-media weapon of political warfare is the fact that he was withdrawing his support for Najib. Leave aside the rationale behind that stance. The point that gawks is the implications.

Mahathir was withdrawing his support for the number one nation-driver. Najib is more than an Umno leader. He is the prime minister of Malaysia’s 28 million people here and is so, too, seen as such all across the globe.  

Suppose a leader or even a former top leader of the opposition bloc said the same. What would be the national stand? What would the Barisan National that is the government in power do? One can only imagine the magnitude of the reverberations.

So for Najib to meekly dismiss Mahathir’s public outcry against him as merely an internal party matter only paints a more questioning picture. The public perception that is, as a result, being fuelled is that all things are certainly then not well within Umno the pack leader of BN.

Unfortunately some politicians have scurried to harp that Mahathir was only criticising. Never mind about the fact that that criticism was against the nation’s number one leader and a public stance made also for the magnifying lens of global opinion.

How do we now deal with this national shame? There is reputation and serious collateral damage here, folks!

Suppose Najib is a written-off failure, then can the people take to the streets to rally behind Mahathir to save the nation from further doom?

Suppose Najib is still endorsed as a capable leader, do the citizens then scream for Mahathir’s neck to rescue the nation from shame and disgrace?

Three monkeys stance?

Or shall we take the position of the proverbial three-monkeys stance: see no evil, speak no evil, hear no evil as we pray that the tide will flow by the bridge and soon be forgotten? At least, we Malaysians have a track record for such benignness, let us face it.

No. Something is seriously not right and Malaysians must take personal and collective accountability for all such failures. Otherwise we will all end up as in the story of the sorry frogs in a slow cooking pot of water, i..e we do not even know we are in trouble, serious trouble until it is too late to realise and save the nation.

In short, this is not an internal party problem. It is not even one man against another. It is far beyond speculation that Mahathir is never happy with anyone unless we get a Mahathir-clone to be PM. It is beyond a criticism. It is not a simplistic case of personal opinion - not even one of merely withdrawing support.

Mahathir’s Case Against Najib Detailed

Former premier lists specific reasons for his withdrawal of support for serving PM

As long as two to three months before former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad publicly attacked his successor, Najib Tun Razak, through his blog, the former premier sent Najib a letter bristling with a list of demands to change his ways.

Mahathir’s irritation has sputtered behind the scenes since before the disastrous May 2013 general election, in which the ruling Barisan Nasional lost the popular vote for the first time in 44 years although it retained its majority in parliament via gerrymandering.  Since that time, bloggers deployed by Mahathir have made general attacks on the sitting prime minister, who took office in 2009 with Mahathir’s approval. 

But for the first time he personally criticized Najib in his blog, Che Det, saying on Aug. 16 that he had withdrawn support.  The campaign against Najib has been mounted now in advance of the November United Malays National Organization general assembly, where it appears Najib has an unassailable position as party president.

Mahathir was scheduled to leave tonight for London, where Najib and his wife Rosmah Mansor have been for the past several days after a holiday that began three weeks ago after Najib’s speech to families of the doomed MH17 airliner, which was brought down by a rocket over disputed territory in Ukraine on July 17. 

In the letter to Najib, quoted to Asia Sentinel by a businessman with links to UMNO, Mahathir reportedly listed seven demands. Najib is said to have dispatched Tengku Adnan Tenku Mansor, the secretary-general of the United Malays National Organization, to see Mahathir, asking him to withdraw the letter.  Mahathir refused, however, sources say.  In the intervening weeks, nothing has happened. 

Since Mahathir’s attack, the story has been playing out behind the scenes of the mainstream media, which are controlled by the political parties that make up the national ruling coalition. They have gone black, carrying only praise for Najib without mentioning Mahathir’s assault. Instead, the papers have merely included statements of support for Najib from leaders such as Foreign Minister Hishamuddin Hussein and others without mentioning the reason the support is needed. 

Meanwhile the story has lit up the Internet, with independent news portals having a field day while Mahathir’s blogger allies including Rocky’s Bru, Outsyed the Box and others have defended him.

The demands listed in the letter included one that Najib reform the controversial 1MDB sovereign fund, which is deeply in debt after having funded a long string of controversial projects. It is said to be a major scandal sizzling out of sight and involving controversial Chinese playboy Taek Jho Low and Najib’s wife, Rosmah Mansor. 

The octogenarian former premier also complained that not enough contracts let by Petronas, the national energy company, were going to build up Bumiputeras, mostly ethnic Malays, but instead were being let to more neutral parties. At one point in October of 2013, Mahathir actually resigned from Petronas, saying his doctors had advised him to slow down. But the real reason is said to have been his anger with Najib’s performance. 

He also accused Najib of being too friendly with foreign governments including the United States over the bid to join President Barack Obama’s TransPacific Partnership Agreement free trade pact, andSingapore for bending to Singapore’s wishes and cancelling a controversial crooked bridge between the two countries over the Singapore Strait. He was also said to be miffed that Mahathir’s immediate successor, Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, attended a dinner with Obama during the latter’s Malaysia visit but that he wasn’t invited.

He also objected to the so-called one-off BRIM cash handouts that the government announced to households making less than RM3,000 (US$847) per month in 2012 as an election sweetener to alleviate the burden of a rising cost of living for low-income earners, saying it was breaking thebudget. It ended up costing the treasury as much as RM4 billion.

He demanded that Malaysia Airlines, which is 70 percent owned by the Khazanah Nasional sovereign fund, be turned over to the private sector to attempt to right it after two disastrous crashes that took the lives of more than 500 people and which is almost moribund, losing billions of dollars. The private sector is said to be Syed Mokhtar al-Bukhairy, a longtime Mahathir crony who became the country’s richest Bumi tycoon, largely through government contracts.

Finally, Mahathir criticized Najib over the breakdown in racial and religious relations in the country, which have grown progressively more poisonous by the year.  That seems to be a striking obtuseness on Mahathir’s part, since he has backed the Malay-supremacy NGO Perkasa, headed by firebrand Ibrahim Ali, and has made incendiary statements about racial superiority on his own. Prior to the 2013 general election, he sought to lead a major rally on May 13, the anniversary of 1969 communal riots that took  the lives of hundreds.  Najib forced the cancellation of the rally.

Allies say Mahathir’s aim is not to bring down Najib, but to apply enough pressure to force him into making deep changes in the way the government is being run. However, at the age of 89, having been out of power since 2003, and with few remaining allies in UMNO, it is questionable at this point how much clout he still has. 

However, he has a formidable record, having forced the ouster of Tunku Abdul Raman and Hussein Onn as prime ministers before his own 22 year period in office, beat back challenges by UMNO stalwarts Tengku Razaleigh, the Finance Minister, and both Musa Hitam and Anwar Ibrahim as his deputy prime ministers, all of whom attempted to unseat him,  and then forced the departure of the successor he picked, Abdullah Badawi.  He is expected to mount a daunting campaign against Najib when the two return from overseas.

Pakatan Rakyat victory will spell end of Barisan, says Anwar

The de facto PKR leader, who is also the PR candidate in the by-election, said a victory on March 23 would answer all the doubts and questions raised by various quarters over his candidacy.

"If Selangor really succeeds and develops, provides the people with good services – that would be the perfect riposte to all the Pakatan critics and doubters.

"It will be a sign that the history of BN and Umno in Malaysia is coming to an end," Anwar said.

Addressing about 300 supporters and residents in Sungai Sekamat, Kajang, last night, Anwar said nomination day was a long way away but the attacks against him had begun.

"Campaigning has not started, but I am insulted and assaulted daily," he told the crowd.

Even former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has waded into the fray, expressing his fears if Anwar is appointed the Selangor menteri besar.

Dr Mahathir has cast doubts on Anwar's suitability as a leader, claiming that the Permatang Pauh MP had formed PKR to realise his ambition of becoming prime minister.

"Anwar is adaptable and capable of changing his colours to suit the circumstance," Dr Mahathir said, referring to the former's speech at a church last weekend.

However, Anwar said it was because of this attitude and honesty PKR supporters were still steadfastly supporting him despite the various obstacles that he had faced in his political career.

"Integrity and honesty is important. I retain the support of the people despite being insulted, mocked and jailed because the public feels I am a man of my word.

"Kelantan is not a rich state but the rakyat adore former menteri besar Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat," Anwar said.

"The people know that Nik Abdul Aziz does not use his position to enrich his family members nor did he take a single state share."

Anwar took a swipe at Dr Mahathir and wondered how his son had become a billionaire if he did not abuse his position.

Business magazine Malaysian Business yesterday reported that Datuk Mokhzani Mahathir was listed among the top 10 richest individuals in Malaysia.

Mokhzani was listed ninth on the list with a total wealth of RM4.22 billion. He rose four spots compared with last year through his company, Sapura Kencana Petroleum.

Last year, Mokhzani had been ranked 13th with a total wealth of RM2.63 million, according to Malaysian Business.

Anwar praised the voters in Kajang for being more Internet-savvy compared with the voters in his Permatang Pauh constituency.

"Kajang's unique trait is due to the strong Internet penetration in the area. Kajang residents follow more news on the Internet compared with mainstream television and newspapers." – February 20, 2014.

（雪蘭莪‧八打靈再也15日訊）前首相敦馬哈迪抨擊英國新聞雜誌周刊《經濟學人》一篇指“強化土著經濟政策”顯示國陣返回種族政策的報導，反諷後者的邏輯是任何想要賦予（佔馬來西亞68%人口的）馬來人和土著企業股份（及財富），並成為專業人士的政策都是不公平、錯誤和不公正的。

該篇報導名為“Bumi, not booming（不蓬勃發展的土著社群）”，副題是“The ruling party returns to it sold habits of race-based handouts（執政黨返回到種族政策的舊習慣）”。

他昨日在其部落格發表的《政治家對比記者》一文中反諷《經濟學人》，“（他們認為）自由人士不應該這麼做，若人們得不到任何的財富共享和專業地位，那麼他們就應當只做可憐的觀眾。”

指納吉拉攏華人卻被拒

“（原來）做正確的事情就是幫助那些殷實富裕的人們變得更加富裕，更富有的社群變得更富有，並使貧困的社區變得更貧窮。”

他也說，首相拿督斯里納吉在大選前曾試圖拉攏華人而忽視馬來人的困境，甚至忽略國家教育政策，而以金錢支援華教。

“不過，華裔選民拒絕了他，他只獲得3%的華人選票，這聽起來多麼忘恩負義。”

“對此，（經濟學人卻說）納吉應發放更多的錢，這才是正確的事。”

他表示，馬來人支持納吉，納吉回報大選支持，但顯然地，根據《經濟學人》的說法，“支持那些支持你的人是錯誤的，你不（應該）在文明國家這樣做，讓支持者腐爛去吧。”

馬哈迪在其部落格點名《經濟學人》多篇有關里約熱內盧、巴西、德國、巴基斯坦、印度及斯里蘭卡的重要政經新聞報導，以及該刊物針對西方政府、電子煙、伊朗核武的分析，總結認為，《經濟學人》作者似乎自以為知道這個世界的一切，也知道如何治愈所有這些苦痛。

“依照西方媒體及經濟學家的智慧話語，顯然地，由記者和專業作家掌舵的世界才可高枕無憂。

“納吉信譽大受打擊”

《經濟學人》“Bumi,not booming”發佈於9月28日，指出首相拿督斯里納吉是倒退回種族政治的“主要損失者”；在大選前，他被視為一個偉大的改革家，然而為了從巫統保守派的衝擊下生存下來，納吉現在被迫突然走回頭路，信譽大受打擊。

報導說，“強化土著經濟政策”是納吉明目張膽地在取悅那些批評他在大選時放棄馬來人的人士，這些舉動至少在目前讓納吉保存勢力，使其在巫統的領導地位不會面臨挑戰。

指慕克力崛起威脅納吉

再者，前首相敦馬哈迪兒子拿督慕克力勢力的崛起也是納吉的隱憂，若慕克力勝選，反納吉勢力可能會圍繞著他，納吉可不願變成弱勢首相而後在內部政變被推翻。

“然而，無可否認地，納吉的信譽已遭受損害。許多馬來西亞人，甚至馬來人，都認為納吉為了挽救權位不惜犧牲政治原則；他強調種族和諧的“一個馬來西亞”口號，如今只是一番空談。”

報導指出，在馬來西亞為“強化土著經濟政策”耗資數十億令吉的同時，華印裔人才將因厭惡種族主義而持續外流他國。這個國家2020年成為高收入國的目標，將會如同納吉的偉大改革一樣，進一步消退。

Picking on Thamrin Ghaffar's allegation, the DAP stalwart tells the former premier to clear the air.

KUALA LUMPUR:  DAP stalwart Lim Kit Siang today alluded that former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad is one of those behind the May 13 racial riots.

“Yesterday during two ceramah in Johor, former deputy prime minister Ghafar Baba’s son Thamrin revealed that the May 13 was due to a mini-coup by a group of men in Umno to topple Tunku [Abdul Rahman]. Former foreign minister Ghazali Shafie in the 1980s said that Mahathir was involved.

“This shows that I am not involved in the May 13 incident. I was not even in KL from May 11 to 13, 1969. I was in Sabah,” he said during a press conference at the DAP headquarters.

Lim also urged Mahathir to clear the air on Thamrin’s revelation.

On the same note, the DAP leader took a swipe at Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak for reminding the people of this lie – Lim’s involvement.

“They even have a candidate who keeps saying this lie in and out of Parliament – Zulkifli Noordin. Najib is saying 1Malaysia but he is dividing the people,” he said.

Lim is also disappointed that BN is playing the race and religion cards against him.

“There are rumours that I am anti-Malay, anti-Islam and anti-Malay monarchs. These are all lies. This shows Najib’s insincerity in signing the Transparency International – Malaysia’s integrity pledge,” he said.

Najib had signed an election integrity pledge with the NGO two months ago and the move was aimed at showing the ruling coalition’s seriousness in fair game in GE13.

Lim also urged his BN opponent and Johor menteri besar Abdul Ghani Othman to ensure a level playing field while campaigning in Gelang Patah.

Both Lim and Ghani would be facing off each other on May 5 for the Gelang Patah seat.

“Let’s begin by ensuring that the Battle for Gelang Patah is clean, fair and done in a gentlemanly style. It does not matter who wins or loses,” said Lim.

He revealed that during his campaign rounds he was well received by the people in Gelang Patah. However there were BN campaigners distributing a 28-page booklet that claimed that Lim was anti-Malay, anti-Islam and anti-Malay monarchs.

“It is despicable acts by wretched people,” he said.

Ex-Umno man defends DAP against May 13 charge

JOHOR Ex-Umno strongman Mohd Tamrin Abdul Ghafar has become an unexpected ally in Pakatan Rakyat’s bid to counter the claim that DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang was behind the May 13 riots in 1969.

The former Batu Berendam MP, who is also the second son of former deputy premier Abdul Ghafar Baba, has claimed that the incident was the outcome of a “mini coup” orchestrated by Umno leaders including Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

“What (then home minister Muhammad) Ghazali (Shafie, left) told (PKR de facto leader) Anwar (Ibrahim) and me, when we were in Umno Youth, was that the incident was a mini coup planned by Umno men, and that Mahathir was involved,” Tamrin said during two Pakatan ceramahs in Gelang Patah last night.

“(First prime minister) Tunku (Abdul Rahman) wrote in his column 'As I See It' in The Star two years before he passed away, that the incident was a deliberate seizure of power by Umno leaders who then blamed it on DAP and the Chinese.”

Lim Kit Siang is running in Gelang Patah, against incumbent Johor Menteri Besar Abdul Ghani Othman, in the hope of extending Pakatan’s 2008 ‘political tsunami’ to Johor.

Tamrin’s disclosure supports the argument of academician Kua Kia Soong that the racial clash in 1969 was the result of a coup d'état by then deputy premier Abdul Razak Hussein against the Tunku, and that Mahathir supported it.

Tamrin recalled that the Tunku had expelled Mahathir from Umno after the latter wrote an open letter calling for the Tunku's resignation after the riots.

“After the Tunku stepped down and Razak took over the premiership, he took Mahathir back into Umno and appointed him as education minister.

“This shows that Razak was grateful to Mahathir (for pressuring the Tunku to step down),” he explained, adding that Kit Siang (left) was not in Kuala Lumpur during the clashes.

He said the continued reference to the incident by Umno, in order to frighten Malay voters, indicates that the BN is desperate.

With anti-establishment sentiment growing rapidly among Chinese Johoreans to Pakatan’s apparent advantage, Umno has flashed the race card to consolidate its support among the Malay electorate in Johor.

Its campaigners have been found distributing publicity material to Malay voters accusing DAP and Kit Siang of causing the May 13 riots.

To counter the charge, Pakatan has brought in several former Umno leaders including ex-law minister Zaid Ibrahim and former Selangor menteri besar Muhammad Muhammad Taib to defend DAP and Kit Siang.

‘Which is the racist party?’

Speaking at his first ceramah in Taman Skudai Indah, to a mixed crowd of 300, Tamrin contrasted the track record of DAP and MCA to prove that DAP is “not a racist party”.

“Since its formation in 1966, DAP has had more than 10,000 Malay, Indian and Punjabi members. During its first party polls, Daeng Ibrahim, a Malay leader, was elected as vice-chairperson.

“Since the formation of the party up to the last general election, a total of 55 Malay candidates have contested parliamentary or state constituencies on the DAP ticket.”

However, Tamrin (left) noted, MCA has never allowed a single Malay or Indian to become its member since its formation in 1951.

“So which is the racist party?” he asked.

“I have known Kit Siang since I became a MP in 1986 ... he has never gone against the rights of Malays. He has fought for the principle of a Malaysian Malaysia. How is that different from 1Malaysia? What is the difference? The difference is that Kit Siang is not corrupted.”

Tamrin urged the Malays to thank DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng(right), who had been jailed for three years after speaking out for a Malay minor who was allegedly raped by an Umno leader.

He claimed that both former MCA president Ong Ka Ting and former deputy president Lim Ah Lek, who he had met recently, are anticipating that MCA will win a maximum of five parliamentary seats in the 13th general election.

“How to win? (MCA president Dr) Chua Soi Lek is the first general since the Ming dynasty who has not gone to war.

“Chua only won one war - the battle of Katerina Hotel, right?” he said, referring to the hotel in Batu Pahat where Chua was recorded on video, having sex with a companion.

On the cusp of GE13: Anwar urges M'sians to embrace "new realities", tells Dr M to SHUT UP

GEORGETOWN - Widely expected by a large cross-section of the people to form and lead the country's next federal government, a humble Anwar Ibrahim reminded his Opposition coalition to fulfill its pledges of bringing change to Malaysia. He vowed to root out corruption, injustice and racial prejudice, urging the people to accept and "live with new realities".

"In the past 6 months I have traveled all around the country and I have seen this developing. How do you explain this phenomenon. Do you think this is because of Anwar or because of Guan Eng or because of Ustaz Hadi or because of DAP or Keadilan or PAS," Anwar told a wildly-cheering crowd of more than 50,000 people on Friday night.

"This is beyond that. This is the people's awakening, you demand change. This comes from the people who want change. And this must be understood by the government. And also by us. We must honor this commitment. It is not a matter of replacing the prime minister or ministers or the government but to honor the commitment to return the dignity to the Malays, the Chinese, Indians, Dayaks and Kadazans... to give them back their rights and dignity as citizens of this beloved country."

Regime change: More than just replacing the PM or govt

He was speaking at a ceramah or political rally to commemorate the 5th anniversary of the landmark March 8, 2008 election day that saw the Opposition sweep to unprecedented prominence in Malaysia.

In that 12th general election, the PR had won control of 5 out of 13 states and more than half the popular vote. In the coming 13th election widely expected to called within weeks, Anwar expects to win the federal government with a minimum 10-seat victory over Prime Minister Najib Razak's Umno-BN coalition.

The 64-year-old Anwar ran through a whole range of issues in his speech, focusing on corruption, injustice and human rights. He took pot shots at his old nemesis Mahathir Mohamad and slammed corruption and racism in the government to the delight of the crowd, which had packed the Padang Kota Lama field to hear him and DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng speak.

"Dr Mahathir says if Anwar becomes the PM, he will sell the country to the Chinese. Najib says he can understand the Chinese in BN but the Chinese in the DAP, they are the worst. For me, I have the most experience - with the Chinese in Gerakan, the Chinese in MCA and I am proud to work with the Chinese in DAP because they have principles and integrity. And this is something the Malays must understand. We cannot develop the country with this type of prejudice. We cannot raise our country with this sort of prejudice. We have to live with new realities."

"We reject Malay racism, we won't allow that to be replaced by Chinese racism or Indian racism. We will have to create a new Malaysian awareness and spirit."

Racism: 'This man must be told to shut up'

Anwar ticked off Najib, whom he accused of lacking the personal integrity and courage to bring about tough reforms needed to weed out the rampant graft in the country. He accused Najib of caving in to the hardline policies of former premier Mahathir Mohamad and failing to defend the "rights and dignity" of the people.

"You threaten to burn the Bible, he keeps quiet, you threaten Dr Mahathir ...my old friend ... I am a proud Malay and a practicing Muslim but as a good Muslim, you don't oppress the rights of the others.

"But where in the world do you have a national leader who has the audacity to question the citizenship of your own people after 50 years .. this man must be told to shut up. Najib, the prime minister, will never have the courage to tell Dr Mahathir, 'please sir, you are wrong in insulting my people... whether Chinese or Indian, they are my people'. This is why I tell Najib - back off. Let 'abang' (big brother) Anwar show you."

The 87-year-old Mahathir still wields tremendous influence in Umno and has recently spoken his mind on various issues and even demanded that the citizenship of Bersih chief Ambiga Sreenevasan be revoked amid calls by the movement for clean polls to the Election Commission to do more to ensure fair play in GE13.

Competitiveness: We can only beat Myanmar now

Anwar warned that Najib's inability to tackle the endemic corruption in the Umno-led government would worsen Malaysia's rising non-competitiveness and falling attractiveness as a destination for investments.

"In 2007, I asked for support because we could not compete anymore. Malaysia has lost its competitiveness, its stature and attraction as a designation for foreign investments. Our market capitalization which used to be No.1 in the 1990s now stands behind Singapore, Jakarta, Thailand. In foreign investments, we have also lost to Singapore, Indonesia, Vietnam. The only one we can beat now is Myanmar," he said.

Boot out Umno-BN in GE13

Anwar urged Malaysians to boot out the Umno-BN, which he said was not only unable to reform the country but also to help itself.

"They are busy now stealing land, timber, contracts, shares and even cattle," said Anwar, taking a shot at the RM250mil NFC debacle, where Umno women's chief Shahrizat Jalil was accused of being corruptly involved in.

"You must help them, give them some free time. Vote them out in the GE. Give them time to study some ethics, learn some manners, culture and Bahasa Melayu," he added, in another dig at the way the Umno-controlled newspapers frequently misquoted him.
