WSJ: Najib used 1MDB's funds for GE13

4:15PM Jun 19, 2015

Wall Street Journal (WSJ) report today claimed that 1MDB's funds were used to bankroll Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's campaign in the 13th general election.

The report said this was achieved by having 1MDB make overpriced purchase of power assets from Genting Group in 2012.

Genting then made a donation to a foundation controlled by Najib before the 13th general election and it claimed the funds were used for campaigning.

"The 1MDB fund in October 2012 acquired a Genting unit that owned a 75 percent stake in a 720-megawatt gas-fired power plant near Kuala Lumpur.

"The price, which was equivalent to about US$740 million at the time, came to RM2.3 billion.

"A few months after the sale, a unit of Genting called Genting Plantations Bhd made a donation of about US$10 million to a Najib-linked charity, according to a spokesperson for Genting Plantations," said the report.

The foundation, WSJ said, was Yayasan Rakyat 1Malaysia, which lists Najib as chairperson on its website.

"Though set up to help underprivileged Malaysians through education and sport, this charity soon got involved in spending that appeared designed to help Najib retain power in the May 2013 election," it said.

1MDB, which has accumulated RM41.8 billion in debt, is owned by the Finance Ministry, a portfolio held by Najib.

'Spent millions'

WSJ said 1MDB's purchase of Genting's stake in the power asset was around five times what it was then worth.

"The price, which was equivalent to about US$740 million at the time, came to RM2.3 billion.

"Genting later reported it had a 1.9 billion ringgit extraordinary gain on this sale, implying a value for its stake in the power plant of just 400 million ringgit - or less than one-fifth what 1MDB paid for it.

"In a second sign that 1MDB paid a high price, the fund’s financial statement for the fiscal year ended in March 2013 said the power unit’s property, plant and equipment were worth a little under RM500 million at the time of acquisition," it said.

WSJ said the "donations" to Yayasan Rakyat 1Malaysia were then poured into the election campaign in Penang for BN's bid to recapture the state.

"It and other charities linked to the government spent millions of dollars before the voting in Penang, a northern state that was an important election battleground.

"Najib visited Penang during the campaign and announced that Yayasan Rakyat 1Malaysia would donate RM2 million to two local schools.

"These schools serve Chinese communities that are not a poor demographic but whose support would be crucial to win votes in the area," it said.

'Goldman pushed to raise money before GE13'

It said regulators found the charity had failed to file its required financial status since 2013.

WSJ added that Goldman Sachs, which received a handsome commission for raising US$3 billion (RM11.22 billion) in bonds for 1MDB, was pressed to do so quickly shortly before the general election.

"Goldman Sachs Group Inc arranged the bond sale and took on extra risk to get the deal done quickly at 1MDB’s request, according to a person familiar with the matter, earning unusually high profits as a result," it said.

Shortly after the general election, Kinibiz reported that Genting made an unexpected RM190 million in donations, believed to be related to the election.

"Analysts were puzzled that the Genting group made such a huge donation, and that too spread out over several companies, in just one quarter, significantly impacting its bottom line.

"They speculated that the so-called donations could be election-related, using charities as fronts. It is normally unthinkable that such large contributions were made to charities, Kinibiz quoted an analyst as saying.

The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) did not directly address the allegation in the WSJ report.

“Unfortunately, the prime minister’s political opponents, unwilling to accept his record or the facts, continue to try to undermine him with baseless smears and rumours for pure political gain," the PMO told WSJ.

WSJ said it was told by 1MDB to refer the matter to Genting. Genting Group declined to comment.

Malaysiakini has contacted the PMO, 1MDB and Genting Group on the WSJ report and is awaiting their responses.

Pakatan's death announced, DAP seeks new allies

12:39PM Jun 16, 2015

Penang chief minister and DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng today announced that Pakatan Rakyat has met its demise.

"The DAP central executive committee (last night) accepts the PAS muktamar's motion to sever ties with DAP and effectively, that Pakatan ceases to exist.

"As Pakatan was formed by the three parties based on consensus and bound by the common policy framework, the PAS muktamar's motion effectively killed off Pakatan.

"Pakatan therefore ceases to exist," he added in a media statement.

Lim said DAP will work with PKR and other forces who aspire to see the end of Umno and BN's one-party rule to reshape and realign Malaysian politics with the aim of winning Putrajaya for the people.
"DAP will work towards a broad based and principled new coalition that shall emerge to fill the political vacuum that can rekindle hopes of change to realise our Malaysian dream for a better future for all,"
he added.

As for the Selangor state government, he said DAP will support for the leadership of Selangor Menteri Besar Mohd Azmin Ali to re-frame the state government with  a new functioning coalition.

This, he added, must be based on the common policy and the Selangor GE 2013 election manifesto that received an overwhelming mandate of more than 60% of the popular vote.

Hadi caused Pakatan paralysis

Delving into history, Lim said Pakatan was formed on April 1, 2008 as a joint response by DAP, PKR and PAS to the deep yearning for political change by Malaysian voters following the political tsunami of the 12th GE in 2008.

"With the massive support from Malaysians, the opposition won more than one-thirds of parliamentary seats and five state governments.

"The leaders of DAP, PKR and PAS agreed to form Pakatan with a set of shared principles in the hope of uniting all anti-Umno/BN forces to bring forth a new era of politics and governance of integrity, accountability and democracy in a progressive Malaysia.

"It was agreed then that decision making in Pakatan would be based on consensus and mutual trust at the leadership council.

"The coalition was not meant to be a coalition of convenience but one that is guided by ideas, principles and ideals for a new Malaysia," he added.

However, Lim said in several major incidents over the past year, including the Selangor menteri besar crisis, decisions agreed upon by the leadership council was violated by PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang.

This, he added, resulted in near-paralysis of the coalition.

He said the situation was exacerbated by Hadi’s willingness to forge a unity government with Umno and his support for Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak despite the 1MDB imbroglio.

"The breach of promise made personally by Hadi at the leadership council on Feb 10 to discuss the hudud laws proposed by PAS first with Pakatan partners before being tabled to the Kelantan state assembly or a private motion by Hadi in Parliament further immobilised the entire leadership council.

"This breach of promise by Hadi was followed by the momentous decision on June 6, when the PAS muktamar, the general assembly and the highest authority of the party, accepted without debate a motion to sever ties with DAP," he added.

PAS, do you know what is "once bitten, twice shy"?

4:00PM Jun 9, 2015
By Allen Tan

Source of pic: http://www.bharian.com.my/node/41303

PAS, I am so sorry that you may not gain the trust from the non-Muslims, especially from me, again. You have voted to sever relationship with DAP without a debate. You played this game so that all the conservative leaders were voted into the top leadership.

Why were those conservatives so afraid of debate? Because you know the more you debate, the more truth would be seen. For a party which embraces extreme Islam, democracy is seen as a White People’s game!

For the past seven years since the 12th general election (GE) in 2008, your behaviour within Pakatan Rakyat was rather dubious, as you have not given up the hudud agenda completely. True enough, this year you have submitted a private member’s bill to Parliament to seek approval for hudud in Kelantan.

In fact, your ambition to implement hudud is not confined to a single state. You hoped to spread it like wildfire to all states. You even hoped to make Malaysia an Islamic state by forming a unity government with Umno.

PAS made a blunder by wrongly interpreting the last two GE results. Firstly, PAS did worse in the Parliament seats in the 13th GE than the previous one. So they thought they must be more Islamic in order to gain better Muslim support.

Secondly, PAS had gained more non-Muslim support from in the last two GEs, so they took for granted that the latter had no problems with hudud. They tried to test the ground by pressing for the hudud agenda more vigorously. And the result - a disaster! It backfired! Such a foolish move is likened to one hitting one’s own foot with a stone.

It was not Pakatan which betrayed PAS but rather the reverse. DAP criticised PAS out of principle. PAS passed the motion to sever relationship with DAP like it was child’s play. Now PAS is still considering whether to uphold the motion which was passed. PAS, do you know what is ‘once bitten, twice shy?’ It was not only DAP which was hurt, but entire non-Muslims who voted for PAS!

Now, what would I think the next move for Pakatan should be? Either PAS or DAP must leave Pakatan. The coalition could never remain status quo. Because you will never know what PAS would do if Pakatan were to win the next GE. PAS would likely join BN and the latter would rule again. Therefore, a status quo Pakatan will see defeat, because where PAS candidates are, non-Muslims will not vote for them.

MCA and Gerakan will increase their attack on Pakatan over hudud, too.

Abolish the name of ‘Pakatan Rakyat’

As such, I would suggest DAP and PKR to cooperate again, and let there be a new party, say PasMa, to join up together with them. The name of ‘Pakatan Rakyat’ must be abolished in order to kick out PAS, and a new name be replaced. It must be done immediately so that all the voters must get familiarised with the new PasMa party logo.

However, I have a little bit of concern, that is, the Registrar of Societies (ROS) could be a stumbling block. It would delay PasMa’s approval until the last minute. For example, even at this moment, DAP is still in trouble with ROS over which it has yet to receive an official letter from ROS to recognise its party election results which took place several years ago. Could ROS play up with DAP again before GE14?

Malaysia is definitely in need of intervention from God. Let us continue to pray so that Malaysia will move in God’s direction. We need to have a strong opposition coalition to directly fight with BN in GE14. We need to have more people irrespective of race and religion who are righteous to join DAP, PKR and PasMa, since our electoral system is not free and fair. We bless Malaysia and pray that a new Malaysia will rise up which will be a blessing to the nations!

Christians do not need more NGOs

7:45AM Jun 3, 2015

By Allen Tan

Rev Wong Kim Kong, together with some Christian leaders, formed an NGO called Christians for Peace and Harmony in Malaysia (CPHM).

Of course, they have the right to form any organisation. But I really doubt their motive as the so-called duty in dealing with matters of other faiths of all Malaysians is mere duplication, as Christian Federation of Malaysia (CFM), Council of Churches of Malaysia (CCM) and the National Evangelical Christian Fellowship (NECF) have been playing active roles thus far.

CPHM launched its formation on June 2. But I was appalled that it chose the five-star Majestic Hotel right in the golden triangle of KL to hold a banquet. It cost a lot of money. NGOs are funded by their respective members and sometimes by the public. As such the trustees are expected to be careful in handling finances.

As Christians, we the more needed to be thrifty being good stewards approved of the Lord. The money could be put to better use. In times like this, people have less money to spend due to the Goods and Services Tax (GST) but the trustees squandered unnecessarily a la BN-style!

Putrajaya may not have funded them. But there are many tycoons in certain parties within BN. Rev Wong may claim CPHM is non-partisan and apolitical, but these tycoons may see otherwise as this as an opportune time to re-garner support, and thus would be happily contributing their substance.

Rev Wong may claim that many Christians approached him and expressed their concerns about things happening in this country. But how many was ‘many’? Did the figures become too many that necessitated him to the extent of forming a new NGO? There are many more who are the majority who trust in God for the destiny of this nation instead.

In my own observation, Rev Wong has never been a non-partisan figure. When he was the general-secretary of NECF, he did invite Dr Mahathir Mohamad to give a speech to the pastors and Christians. Prior to GE12 in 2008, he invited MCA to have a dialogue with the pastors. What about when people requested him to give a similar session to Pakatan Rakyat? Of course in the end it never materialised.

In conclusion, more NGOs will not solve the problems in this country. The answer is with the PM, Najib Abdul Razak, himself. When there were issues, Malaysians didn’t hear from him. If only he truly exercises his duty as a PM, most of the problems would be solved.

‘I did not sneak into CPHM meeting’

2:12PM Jun 2, 2015

By Stephen Ng

With reference to the article by Koh Jun Lin in Malaysiakinitoday, I did not “sneak” into a Christians for Peace and Harmony in Malaysia (CPHM) meeting to check out what it is about, as described by Rev Wong Kim Kong.

I have always been invited to this weekly meeting which is hosted by one Pastor Lazarus. I consider myself as part of this support group.

Rev Wong was never part of the group. It was also not a CPHM meeting. He was only invited to share about his new organisation. Many of us are too polite to tell him that we do not plan to attend, but as usual, he made it seem as though he has the support of the 20 pastors there.

Anyway I don’t think he was invited but someone must have lobbied for him to be invited. After all, he is the one trying to reach out to the grassroots. During his speech, there were already several occasions he subtly hit out at Pakatan, Anwar Ibrahim and PAS. Throughout the speech, he subtly hinted that Najib Abdul Razak is good.

This is why I questioned his motive especially when he claims his organisation is not being partisan. In fact, I recall Paul Low talking about this movement as early as last year or early this year. Without the government’s involvement, do you think this whole thing can take off that easily, along with the big funding?

How did they manage to put up a huge signboard in Putrajaya without being ‘attacked’ anyway?

We're non-partisan, says leader of Christian group

By Koh Jun Lin

Despite concerns over the launch of a new Christian group tonight with Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak as its guest of honour, the group's chairperson, Rev Wong Kim Kong, is giving his assurance that the group is strictly non-partisan.
Wong appealed to members of the public to remain calm and to give his group - Christians for Peace and Harmony in Malaysia (CPHM) - some time to prove that it is sincere and honest in its cause.
"Let us, over time, prove our sincerity and confirm whether we are politicall- motivated or not.
"Just give us time and allow us, through our future activities and our pursuits, to show whether we are politically-motivated or manipulated by other people," Wong told Malaysiakini when contacted yesterday.
He explained that it was CPHM that had invited Najib to the launch and “not any other way around”.
The group had extended the invitation the invitation sometime between February and March this year and did not hear from Najib's office until April 28.
Apart from Najib, Wong said CPHM had also invited all Christian cabinet ministers to attend the event, as well as the top two leaders of all political parties, including those from Pakatan Rakyat.
This would not be the first time he has invited a prime minister to an event either, Wong said.
Previously, he said, as part of his work when he led the National Evangelical Christian Fellowship (NECF), he had successfully invited then Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad to two separate international conferences.
"When we did it at that time, we also received a lot of criticism. At the end, they saw the results. I still have all the newspaper cuttings," he said.
'PM will lend credibility to event'
Wong explained that the CPHM had invited Najib to officiate the group's launch because it felt that it needed backing from someone of his stature.
"To reach out to other groups that are suspicious of Christians, or not friendly to us, we need someone of influence to give us the credibility to be able to talk to the other side.
"In the context of Malaysia, different people approach their issues at different levels and in different ways. We are not saying that our way is the best way… our approach is one of the alternatives.
"We are not the best. We are not the only way. We are just saying that every different individual can influence," he said.
As for the group's funding, Wong said every cent came from the Malaysian Christian community and none of it was from the government, including the cost of tonight’s launch banquet.
The banquet is to be held at the ballroom of the Majestic Hotel, a five-star hotel in Kuala Lumpur.
Wong said the group raised the necessary funds even before it decided to hold the banquet.
Its practice of raising funds exclusively from the local Christian community is similar to the practice of the other groups that he had been affiliated with, he said, namely the NECF and Malaysian Care.
Not out to compete

Asked to explain CPHM's role amid many other Christian groups already in existence, Wong said the other groups were more focused in fulfilling the spiritual needs of Christians.
In contrast, he said CPHM's target audience is the entire Malaysian population, as CPHM does not aim to fulfil their spiritual needs, but to foster an environment that is conducive for the peaceful co-existence of members of different faiths.
For example, he said, CPHM would not take up the Allah issue, which is centred on the demand championed by various other Christian groups to allow the use of the word "Allah" as the translation for the word "God" in the Malay language Bible.
This move is objected by most Muslim groups in Malaysia.
Instead, Wong said, CPHM would take up issues that disrupt interfaith harmony, such as the Taman Medan church protest in April, where Muslim residents demanded that a church there takes down its newly erected Cross.
"That (protest) disrupted the community. Those incidents create disorder within the community. Then we will voice our opinion," he said.
Ibrahim Ali invited as well
Wong also justified extending CPHM's invitation to the Malay right-wing group Perkasa, which is seen to be racist despite vehement denials from its president Ibrahim Ali (photo).
He said as a member of clergy, he believes in the teaching of the Bible to love all, including one’s enemies.
"I believe that it is my duty that, whatever attitude or behaviour a person has, it is still my responsibility to forgive and love," he said.
Wong said this applied even to Stephen Ng, against whom he held no grudge despite Ng’s lengthy article questioning CPHM's motivations that had been published in several news outlets, including Malaysiakini.
Overall, Wong said non-Christian groups make up about 30 percent of invited guests to the function tonight, including the G25, which is a group of Malay former senior civil servants promoting moderation.
As for Christian groups, Wong said the guests included Christians from all denominations, including smaller ones such as the Seventh Day Adventists, as well as most of the head of church denominations.
As to whether another Malay right-wing group Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (Isma) is attending, Wong said he was not sure.
"I don’t think we invited Isma. No prejudice (against them), sometimes we just overlook. I don't know how it was overlooked.
"I'm not sure whether my colleague did (invite them) or not, I can't remember," he said.
Won't defend himself
Previously, Ng's articles had raised questions on CPHM's funding and Najib's involvement, and he also asked whether the group is a ploy to help BN win votes.
Wong said Ng had "sneaked into" one of CPHM's meetings to question him, which he had already answered.
"But this guy, I don't know for what reason, but he twisted (my words) in every way. I have 20 pastors for you to interview to answer whether this guy is telling the truth or not," he chuckled.
Nevertheless, Wong said, he does not feel the need to defend himself because people who already know him were familiar with his community services.
"I just don’t want people to fall into that kind of unkind nature," he added.
