Malaysia's U.S. Propaganda

Kuala Lumpur paid American conservative journalists to smear an opposition leader.

A general election is expected next month in the Southeast Asian nation of Malaysia, and that usually means political shenanigans—abuse of national security laws, media manipulation and character assassination. After the last election in 2008, when the ruling coalition barely held on to power, public anger at such practices prompted Prime Minister Najib Razak to redraft laws and reform the electoral system. However, new revelations that his government paid American journalists to attack opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim raise questions whether those changes went far enough.
In January, conservative American blogger Joshua Treviño belatedly registered under the Foreign Agents Registration Act, revealing that from 2008-2011 he was paid $389,724.70, as well as a free trip to Malaysia, to provide "public relations and media consultancy" services to the Malaysian government.
These consisted of writing for a website called Malaysia Matters, now defunct, as well as channeling $130,950 to other conservative writers who wrote pro-government pieces for other newspapers and websites. When questioned in 2011 by the Politico website about whether Malaysian interests funded his activities, Mr. Treviño flatly denied it: "I was never on any 'Malaysian entity's payroll,' and I resent your assumption that I was."

Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim
The campaign was more targeted than the Malaysian ruling coalition's domestic attacks on Mr. Anwar. Mr. Treviño's site mainly went after the opposition leader for anti-Semitic remarks and his alliance with the Islamist party PAS, and even accused him of links to terrorists through the International Institute of Islamic Thought. Mr. Anwar has made anti-Semitic comments—though that's in part to fend off domestic accusations that he's too cozy with Zionists. He also has ties to organizations that have taken Saudi money, but the suggestion that he somehow has "ties to terrorism" is preposterous.
The site also defended an outrageous charge of sodomy brought against Mr. Anwar from 2008-2012, and it criticized the U.S. State Department and The Wall Street Journal for taking Mr. Anwar's side. These postings were clearly aimed at sowing doubt among other would-be Anwar defenders in the U.S., especially on the right of the U.S. political spectrum.
Mr. Treviño paid other writers who know almost nothing about Malaysia but mimicked his propaganda. The New Ledger, edited by Ben Domenech, was even more vociferous, calling Mr. Anwar a "vile anti-Semite and cowardly woman-abuser." One posting was entitled, "Muslim Brotherhood's terrorist money flowing to Anwar Ibrahim." According to Mr. Treviño's filing, he paid Mr. Domenech $36,000 for "opinion writing." Three contributors of anti-Anwar items to the New Ledger—Rachel Motte, Christopher Badeaux and Brad Jackson—were paid $9,500, $11,000 and $24,700 respectively.
Mr. Treviño was initially paid by public relations multinational APCO Worldwide, which had a longstanding contract with the Malaysian government. APCO's Kuala Lumpur representative through 2010, Paul Stadlen, now works in Prime Minister Najib's office. David All, who at the time ran his own PR firm and collaborated on Malaysia Matters, also provided cash.
But from 2009-11, the Malaysian money came through Fact-Based Communications, which under the leadership of journalist John Defterios produced programs on client countries for CNN, CNBC and the BBC. After this was revealed in 2011, the three networks dropped all FBC programs, and Atlantic Media Company President Justin Smith resigned from its board.
Influence-peddling has a long and sordid history in Washington, and governments that use repressive methods at home yet want to remain on friendly terms with the U.S. typically have the biggest bankrolls. It's not unheard of for PR operators to pay less reputable journalists and think-tankers to write favorable coverage, as the Jack Abramoff case in the mid-2000s showed.
The Malaysian scheme, however, is notable because it drew in respected writers such as Rachel Ehrenfeld, who has contributed to the Journal in the past and took $30,000, Claire Berlinski, who got $6,750, and Seth Mandel, an editor at Commentary magazine, who was paid $5,500. Some of the articles appeared in well-known publications such as National Review and the Washington Times.
Mr. Najib's falling popularity at home suggests his days as Prime Minister could be numbered. The irony is that he was more democratic and played a more responsible role in the region than his predecessors. Even opposition figures have quietly admitted to us that he has steered Malaysia in the right direction. That should have been more than enough for a legitimate public relations operation to work with. Resorting to underhanded tactics to undermine the opposition has only backfired for Mr. Najib, at home and abroad.

A SIGN FROM GOD? : ANWAR IS INNOCENT - Saiful's dad apologizes for Sodomy II slander

A SIGN FROM GOD? : ANWAR IS INNOCENT - Saiful's dad apologizes for Sodomy II slander
The father of the political aide who claimed he had been sodomized by Malaysian Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim has confessed that his son was used by officials close to Prime Minister Najib Razak to defame Anwar.
“I deeply regret all the slander hurled against Anwar which involved my son, Saiful Bukhari. Anwar is innocent and a victim of this slander. I apologise to Anwar and his family. He and his family have suffered a lot as a result of this slander,” Azlan Mohd Lazim told a press conference on Friday.
A sign from God to go for change?
Azlan was a staunch Umno member who had stood by his son, frequently chiding Anwar for having abused Saiful and demanding justice from the authorities. It is not clear if Azlan is still an Umno member.
However, it must be noted that Anwar has already been acquitted by the High Court of the sodomy charges that he said were manifestly fabricated to stop him from advancing in his political career.
Sodomy is punishable under Malaysian law with imprisonment of up to 20 years and homosexuality is banned by Islam. The charges, if they had stuck, would have destroyed Anwar's career and bring to a halt the gains made by his Pakatan Rakyat coalition of PKR, PAS and DAP parties.
In 1998, former premier Mahathir Mohmad too had used the sodomy card to jail Anwar for 6 years before the Federal Court - the highest court in the country - overturned the charges and freed Anwar.
Whatever his motivation, Azlan's confession is a great boost for Anwar as the country hurtles headlong into its 13th general election.
"To me, this is a sign from God, a blessing for the change that must take place for Malaysia to heal itself and pull back from the brink of evil. This may sound dramatic but it is clear that the Umno-BN government has lost track of the right path. Their top leaders can no longer separate good from evil. They think nothing of launching conspiracies like Sodomy I and II just to cling to power, and some say even the Lahad Datu intrusion is a conspiracy," Tan Kee Kwong, a senior PKR leader and the head of its disciplinary committee, told Malaysia Chronicle.
"Even though the courts have found Anwar innocent - not just once but twice -  the taint and whispers still weigh on the conservative in our society, especially among the Muslims and the women community. Hopefully, they will accept the truth and no longer be diverted by ruthless political tactics, where religion and the fear of homosexuality are used to tarnish a person's integrity."
PM is involved: Who helped him?
According to the 60-year-old Azlan, all of his media statements as well as Saiful's were prepared by a lawyer and an official from the PM's office.
“They are the masterminds behind all the sodomy slander against Anwar, which involved my son. I have never been contacted by any quarters to obtain my statement as his father from the beginning to the end of the trial,” said Azlan.
He also said Saiful never told him of the sodomy and that he had learned about it from the government-controlled mass media. Neither has the government - the police or the Attorney-General Chambers - met him or asked for his opinion about the sodomy case.
All eyes are now on the identities of the lawyer and the official in the PM's office who had directed the Sodomy II script.
Despite the infamy the case has brought to Malaysia, with even international tycoons like Richard Branson condemning the government's persecution of Anwar, the Attorney-General had appealed the acquittal, arguing that Saiful was entitled to justice. The case is due to be heard on July 22.
Saiful was not present at the press conference. Azlan said he does not plan to urge his son to withdraw the appeal or to drop any charges.
“It is up to my son to evaluate the situation and decide for himself. I do not want to comment on the court case (Court of Appeal) which is still ongoing... but what I revealed today is on voluntary basis,” said Azlan.
Too many lies: Umno has lost the trust of the Malays
Azlan admitted he was now a supporter of the Pakatan Rakyat, saying he had decided to unveil the truth after having collected information during the course of the trial.
“Actually I don't believe the allegations made against Anwar...everything was so carefully planned and executed (by the official)," said Azlan.
“As a Malay and a Muslim, I started to realize the evil of this plan. I don't want to continue to conspire with this malicious slander. I want the people who love this country to know their malicious intention. If this malicious intention continues, not only the Malays and Muslims would be destroyed, but the nation would be destroyed as well. I do not want to see this happen."
Azlan's final words reflected a surprisingly sharp U-turn in his political outlook, a further indication that perhaps the era of the Umno-BN's authoritarian and bullying regime was nearing an end after 55 years.
“Let us pray to Allah to win the struggle of Anwar and Pakatan to take over the government in the 13th general election,” Azlan said in concluding his statement.

On the cusp of GE13: Anwar urges M'sians to embrace "new realities", tells Dr M to SHUT UP

On the cusp of GE13: Anwar urges M'sians to embrace "new realities", tells Dr M to SHUT UP
GEORGETOWN - Widely expected by a large cross-section of the people to form and lead the country's next federal government, a humble Anwar Ibrahim reminded his Opposition coalition to fulfill its pledges of bringing change to Malaysia. He vowed to root out corruption, injustice and racial prejudice, urging the people to accept and "live with new realities".
"In the past 6 months I have traveled all around the country and I have seen this developing. How do you explain this phenomenon. Do you think this is because of Anwar or because of Guan Eng or because of Ustaz Hadi or because of DAP or Keadilan or PAS," Anwar told a wildly-cheering crowd of more than 50,000 people on Friday night.
"This is beyond that. This is the people's awakening, you demand change. This comes from the people who want change. And this must be understood by the government. And also by us. We must honor this commitment. It is not a matter of replacing the prime minister or ministers or the government but to honor the commitment to return the dignity to the Malays, the Chinese, Indians, Dayaks and Kadazans... to give them back their rights and dignity as citizens of this beloved country."
Regime change: More than just replacing the PM or govt
He was speaking at a ceramah or political rally to commemorate the 5th anniversary of the landmark March 8, 2008 election day that saw the Opposition sweep to unprecedented prominence in Malaysia.
In that 12th general election, the PR had won control of 5 out of 13 states and more than half the popular vote. In the coming 13th election widely expected to called within weeks, Anwar expects to win the federal government with a minimum 10-seat victory over Prime Minister Najib Razak's Umno-BN coalition.
The 64-year-old Anwar ran through a whole range of issues in his speech, focusing on corruption, injustice and human rights. He took pot shots at his old nemesis Mahathir Mohamad and slammed corruption and racism in the government to the delight of the crowd, which had packed the Padang Kota Lama field to hear him and DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng speak.
"Dr Mahathir says if Anwar becomes the PM, he will sell the country to the Chinese. Najib says he can understand the Chinese in BN but the Chinese in the DAP, they are the worst. For me, I have the most experience - with the Chinese in Gerakan, the Chinese in MCA and I am proud to work with the Chinese in DAP because they have principles and integrity. And this is something the Malays must understand. We cannot develop the country with this type of prejudice. We cannot raise our country with this sort of prejudice. We have to live with new realities."
"We reject Malay racism, we won't allow that to be replaced by Chinese racism or Indian racism. We will have to create a new Malaysian awareness and spirit."
Racism: 'This man must be told to shut up'
Anwar ticked off Najib, whom he accused of lacking the personal integrity and courage to bring about tough reforms needed to weed out the rampant graft in the country. He accused Najib of caving in to the hardline policies of former premier Mahathir Mohamad and failing to defend the "rights and dignity" of the people.
"You threaten to burn the Bible, he keeps quiet, you threaten Dr Mahathir ...my old friend ... I am a proud Malay and a practicing Muslim but as a good Muslim, you don't oppress the rights of the others.
"But where in the world do you have a national leader who has the audacity to question the citizenship of your own people after 50 years .. this man must be told to shut up. Najib, the prime minister, will never have the courage to tell Dr Mahathir, 'please sir, you are wrong in insulting my people... whether Chinese or Indian, they are my people'. This is why I tell Najib - back off. Let 'abang' (big brother) Anwar show you."
The 87-year-old Mahathir still wields tremendous influence in Umno and has recently spoken his mind on various issues and even demanded that the citizenship of Bersih chief Ambiga Sreenevasan be revoked amid calls by the movement for clean polls to the Election Commission to do more to ensure fair play in GE13.
Competitiveness: We can only beat Myanmar now
Anwar warned that Najib's inability to tackle the endemic corruption in the Umno-led government would worsen Malaysia's rising non-competitiveness and falling attractiveness as a destination for investments.
"In 2007, I asked for support because we could not compete anymore. Malaysia has lost its competitiveness, its stature and attraction as a designation for foreign investments. Our market capitalization which used to be No.1 in the 1990s now stands behind Singapore, Jakarta, Thailand. In foreign investments, we have also lost to Singapore, Indonesia, Vietnam. The only one we can beat now is Myanmar," he said.
Boot out Umno-BN in GE13
Anwar urged Malaysians to boot out the Umno-BN, which he said was not only unable to reform the country but also to help itself.
"They are busy now stealing land, timber, contracts, shares and even cattle," said Anwar, taking a shot at the RM250mil NFC debacle, where Umno women's chief Shahrizat Jalil was accused of being corruptly involved in.
"You must help them, give them some free time. Vote them out in the GE. Give them time to study some ethics, learn some manners, culture and Bahasa Melayu," he added, in another dig at the way the Umno-controlled newspapers frequently misquoted him.

BN must be destroyed

Dean Johns

Malaysiakini
Mar 6, 2013
I’ve expressed this obvious message in so many ways over the years – in attempts to spice it up with variety – all to no apparent avail thus far, that it strikes me that I should try mindless repetition for a change.
This will be terribly tedious for us all of course, but the possible gain could be well worth our collective pain. Because repetition of the patently, blatantly obvious has worked a treat in the past.
Most famously, as history recalls, for Cato the Elder, who in the years between 175 and 146BC bored his fellow ancient Romans witless by ending his every speech in the senate with the statement that “Carthage must be destroyed”.
Four words that for years rendered Cato a figure of fun. But finally taken seriously and given force by the Roman sword, they proved to be a death sentence to the dreaded Carthage.
Thus my hopes for the similar success of my mantra for the foreseeable future, or at least until Malaysia’s endlessly-awaited 13th general election: BN must be destroyed.
Admittedly, BN is not a foreign threat to Malaysia as Carthage was to Rome. But this criminal coalition is arguably as dangerous to the future of the Malaysia and Malaysians as any external enemy might be.
For more than 50 years, and especially in the past 30, BN has been an insidious, creeping evil attacking and infesting Malaysia by stealth.
Steadily stealing as much of the nation’s land, oil, timber, corporate wealth and hard cash as it can get away with, and simultaneously robbing Malaysians of all possible forms of defence or redress.
BN may not be an invader, but it is certainly an all-pervader. It has systematically colonised and co-opted the civil services at every level from federal to local with its own relatives, cronies, sycophants and place-seekers.
Perverting the system of justice
It has flooded the country with foreign workers to ensure cheap, sweated – if not slave labour – for its captive economy, and secretly handed-out citizenships to illegal immigrants selected as most likely to show their gratitude in the form of votes.
And simultaneously the regime has robbed Malaysians of their proper protections in the face of such assaults on their rights and property by subverting the forces of law and order, perverting the system of justice, corrupting the electoral commission and turning the people’s last hope of protection, the mass media, into its own pack of propagandising ‘prostitutes’.
BN must be destroyed. As of course someday it certainly will be, just as Carthage was over 2,000 years ago by its destroyer, Rome, centuries later.
But BN won’t last for 500 years, despite its desperate attempts to emulate Roman emperors’ ‘bread-and-circuses’ method of control of their subjects with 1Malaysia-styled 1Malaysia People’s Aid (BR1M) and sandiwaras.
In fact, 50+ years look to be pretty much BN’s limit. Most Malaysians with any brains are utterly scornful of the regime’s efforts to forgive the plundering of countless billions of their cash and resources in return for ‘gifts’ of trifling sums of hush-money.
And the sandiwaras intended to amuse and divert the populace seem to be alienating more of the masses than they impress. Throwing Christians to the lions seemed to have been a big hit with ancient Romans for a while, but BN’s threats to burn Christian Bibles seem to have gone down like a lead balloon.
As have many former entertainments that BN has arranged for the diversion and instruction of the public, like the shooting and C4-dismemberment of Altantuya Shaariibuu, the throwing of Teoh Beng Hock out of a window of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) building, and the deaths of dozens of ‘suspects’ in police shoot-outs and custody.
Similarly, while displays of armed combat to the death were reportedly highly popular back in ancient Rome’s Coliseum, the Malaysian people are apparently giving the thumbs-down to the gladiatorial contest that BN has been staging between its commandoes and police and a band of insurgents from the Southern Philippines in Sabah.
Considerable suspicions cast over BN
It has not only resulted in the considerable loss of lives, but has cast considerable suspicions over the BN regime’s grip on the national security that it claims as its forte, the usefulness or otherwise of its armed forces, grossly over-priced weapons acquisitions, and its innocence of involvement in Muslim uprisings in the southern Philippines and Thailand.
But perhaps the most telling casualty of this long-running and still ongoing saga has been any shred of credibility that the BN regime might have retained.
The regime first claimed that two Malaysian casualties had been caused by mortar fire, then changed the story to shooting.
But even then the powers that be couldn’t get their stories straight, with Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein (right) explaining that gunfire had begun when the insurgents tried to make a rush to break through their surrounding cordon, and Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak claiming that the Malaysians casualties had been tricked into presenting themselves as targets by the other side’s waving of a white flag of truce.
Meanwhile, BN’s original assertion via Hishammuddin that the insurgents were not terrorists but fellow Muslims, which struck most of us as quite amazingly oxymoronic, has now morphed into the accusation that Anwar Ibrahim is behind the whole thing.
BN mouthpiece ‘news’ media, including Bernama, Utusan Malaysia, Star Online and TV3 have reported Najib as having urged the intelligence authorities to “probe claims that the opposition had instigated the heir of the Sulu Sultanate to reclaim Sabah”.
This allegation was reportedly based on a claim that Anwar recently met with the leader of the Moro National Liberation Front, Nur Misuari. But embarrassingly for Najib, Misuari recently stated in an interview with the Philippines’ Davao Today that Najib is his friend and a cousin of his grand-nephew.
Thus adding weight to what many of us suspect – that far from Anwar and the opposition, it is actually BN that is using the incursion to destabilise Sabah, either for the purpose of postponing the coming general election, or declaring a state of emergency in line with Najib’s stated strategy to retain power even at the cost of broken bodies and lost lives.
In short, this is yet another sign that it’s way past time for Malaysians to put an end to this rotten regime’s reign of robbery, terror and error. Or as old Cato would put it if he were alive today, BN must be destroyed.
