The Countdown on Barisan Nasional has begun

Najib Re-brands Malaysia!

Forced out of Selangor election race
Forced out of Selangor election race
Hundreds of millions of ringgit of public money has been spent by BN on foreign public relations.

All that money and effort has now been wasted by one simple decision to make a martyr of the opposition leader.

The world can no longer be gulled that Malaysia is a modern, moderate democracy.

Because, it is plain for all to see that this is still the sort of place where the government locks up its political opponents whenever they become too threatening.
The 50th centenary in office, making BN the world’s longest lasting ‘democratic’ regime just reenforces that message to the world.

And it doesn’t help that the ruling clique has chosen a particularly distasteful and backwards-looking charge to pin upon their political target.  It tells the civilised world everything it needs to know about the mentality of the people running Malaysia.

Along with Anwar, wheelchair-bound septuagenarian Karpal Singh is about to be jailed over an ancient long-running charge of sedition after a similar dogged refusal by prosecutors to accept initial acquittals. This is another out-dated law that BN has promised to abolish, but finds it too useful for attacking people who say discomforting things.

Henceforth, the likes of Britain’s David Cameron and Australia’s Tony Abbott are going to find it a lot harder to justify their new enthusiasm for increasing ties and boosting trade with this ‘neglected fellow democracy’.

And those NGOS and human rights groups who have been patiently warning Western governments that Malaysia’s progress towards democracy is a BN sham have been handed vital ammunition on a plate.

‘Independent judiciary’
Playing dirty - if BN thinks it might lose it cheats.
Playing dirty – if BN thinks it might lose it cheats.
The rule in Malaysia is that the higher up the judicial ladder the less independent are the judges.  Today provided a simple case in point for outsiders.

The outcome of a carefully deliberated original trial was over-turned in unseemly and unprecedented haste in a matter of hours.

Malaysia’s once proud legal profession have become on-lookers, while irregularities have become commonplace.

How about the recent release after a period of just token imprisonment of the two still unidentified security officers, who murdered Altantouya Shaariibuu? She had claimed to be PM Najib Razak’s lover, while acting as his interpreter for a scandalous defence submarine kickback deal.

It is right to ask why these men, who abducted then blew up a young woman with army explosives, got only a couple of years when the Court of Appeal is now sentencing opposition leaders to three and five years for matters like alleged sedition and alleged homosexuality, which do not even rate as a crime in most countries?

These are simple and obvious matters that the world will now be paying greater attention to when human rights defenders point them out.
Indeed, by jailing Anwar Ibrahim Najib Razak is taking on an international movement on gay rights and he will see where that leads in terms of good PR in the sorts of countries that BN leaders like to invest their money ie America and Europe.

Indecency and the Malaysian mind – Wolf of Wall Street
Sex movie that holds no bars - BN linked funding.
Sex movie that holds no bars – BN linked funding.
BN’s bizarre form of legal persecution against Anwar Ibrahim can only draw even further attention to the embarrassing hypocrisy of this party’s elite.

Consider the licentious content of the blockbuster unleashed by the PM’s own step-son, Wolf of Wall Street!
The movie shocked many in Hollywood and lost funding from mainstream studios, largely because of its indecency, but Riza Aziz stepped in and injected $100million dollars.
Sodomy is one of the many sexual themes in that movie, combined with an unusual approach to ingesting drugs.

Yet what is treated as a joke in Riza’s Hollywood money-spinner turns out to represent years of imprisonment under his step-father’s hypocritically prudish and prejudiced regime.

Corruption
Malaysia’s determination to make a martyr of its veteran political opposition leader will draw attention to some other revealing facts, glossed over by BN’s expensive international PR drives.
This country of some 22 million people rates Number 4 in terms of gross capital flight (illegal money), beaten only by countries with relatively huge populations i.e. China, Russia and India. That is a mighty telling state of affairs.

The world financial markets are likewise looking askance at the extraordinary sums of money that Malaysia has recently been borrowing via irregular off-shore bond deals through 1 Malaysia Development Bhd, chaired by Najib.
Much of this money seems now to have disappeared into off-shore accounts.
The fact is Malaysia is a mess.  BN have lost control over corruption and are only in power because they rigged the elections.  The man who did win most votes is about to be forced into jail.

Najib should view the precedents of other countries and resist provoking his population too far. Does this BN regime really want to drag Malaysia into conflict, just because it thinks it should have the right to rule for ever?

National Union of Journalists, lawyers’ group condemn The Heat’s suspension

NUJ president Chin Sung Chew said Malaysia as a democratic country should uphold the practice of media freedom.
"The media is the Fourth Estate and we have a responsibility to update the public, especially if there is any abuse or wrongdoing by the Government," Chin told The Malaysian Insider.
"The public are entitled to know what is going on in the Government and we, as the media, are merely upholding our responsibility of informing the people.
"The Home Ministry, by suspending The Heat, has contradicted what a true democratic government would uphold and stand for," he said commenting on the indefinite suspension of The Heat.
Lawyers for Liberty called Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak a “false democrat” following the indefinite suspension of The Heat.
LFL co-founder and adviser Eric Paulsen said the slew of reforms which Najib had promised to implement on the eve of Merdeka Day in 2011 had all come to nothing.
"Najib had promised that Putrajaya would support press freedom by amending the Printing Presses and Publications Act 1984," Paulsen told The Malaysian Insider today.
"But the Home Ministry is still maintaining its authoritarian grip over the press, especially the print publication.”
Referring to the indefinite suspension of news weekly The Heat, Paulsen said this was a typical move by Najib's administration, another flip-flop step.
"Every step Putrajaya takes forward, it is followed by two steps back," Paulsen said.
He also drew attention to Najib's promise to abolish preventive laws and the Internal Security Act 1960.
"Najib kept his word and abolished the Emergency Ordinance and ISA, but Putrajaya then took two steps back by amending the Prevention of Crime Act."
"This is what I mean by Putrajaya and Najib constantly flip-flopping on reforms and human rights and press freedom."
Paulsen also said that many individuals were still being arrested and charged under the Sedition Act 1948 despite Najib's promise to do away with the archaic law
The Heat was suspended indefinitely by the Home Ministry in what is believed to be over a front-page article on Najib and his wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor’s expenditure, sources said.
The weekly's reporters were informed about the suspension during an editorial meeting yesterday.
The weekly, which focuses on politics and socio-economic issues, had been issued a show-cause letter last week.
Editor-in-chief David Lee Boon Siew had also been summoned to the Home Ministry in Putrajaya and told to tone down its reports.
The Malaysian Insider understands that although the show-cause letter did not specify the offending article, it was over a report entitled “All eyes on big spending PM Najib” published in its November 23 to 29 issue.
It is believed that HCK Media, the publisher, had been given 14 days to reply to the show-cause letter but the Home Ministry appears to have suspended the publication before it could reply to the letter.
PKR vice-president N. Surendran said the suspension of the news weekly was a personal act of vengeance by Najib and Rosmah as The Heat dared to criticise the Government over its spending.
The Padang Serai MP described the suspension as undemocratic, arbitrary and an assault on press freedom.
He said the suspension was a calculated move by Putrajaya to keep the media fearful, subservient and emasculated. – December 20, 2013.

Janji Demokrasi Press Statement

Janji Demokrasi

Stop intimidation and harassment of Janji Demokrasi

Gabungan JANJI would like to thank the rakyat who braved police harassment and intimidation by turning up on 30 August 2012 to celebrate the countdown to Merdeka Day. Their presence is an indication of their love for their country and their concern for the failed promises that the government had not fulfilled. We also want to thank the medical team, volunteer security members, Bar Council, KL Legal Aid Centre, Lawyers for Liberty, SUARAM for their legal assistance and monitoring and to all NGOs who supported the event.
Gabungan JANJI would like to reiterate that the event JANJI Demokrasi was to show that promises have yet to be met and they are as follows:

1. Uphold the Federal Constitution
2. Rule of Law:
a) Support civil liberties and freedom of expression
b) Repeal all repressive laws
c) Freedom of the media
3. Clean and fair elections

On the eve of Merdeka Day, Malaysians have proved that they can express their demands in a peaceful manner. As admitted by Dang Wangi district police chief ACP Zainuddin Ahmad there was “no untoward incidents” reported.

But yet intimidation and harassment have again started by the authorities, police and the media, namely Utusan Malaysia.

The police said that they want to investigate against Dato A. Samad Said’s poetry recital on the eve of Merdeka Day but yet did not state the grounds for such an action. Dato A. Samad Said is a national laureate and well known for his poetry and writings. He has won many awards including: Pejuang Sastera (1976); SEA Write Award (1979); Sasterawan Negara (1985); and Sasterawan Nusantara (1999) to name a few. On 30 August 2012, Dato Samad had written a new poetry for Janji Demokrasi and, as usual, he was sharing it with the nation. Therefore, Gabungan JANJI demands that the police and authorities stop their undue harassment and intimidation against a legitimate exercise of the right to freedom of expression.

Next they went after those who were waving the Sang Saka Malaya at the Janji Demokrasi rally. Two of the youth have courageously come forward to admit that they were the ones who waved the flag. They have also explained that their intention was not to replace Jalur Gemilang but to commemorate unsung heroes. As the youth have explained their intention, Gabungan JANJI urges all politicians and media like Utusan Malaysia to stop politicising the issue, stop witch hunting and stop intimidating the two youth and accept their explanation.

Lastly, Gabungan JANJI had already informed the media on 30 August that we do not support nor condone the act of stepping on the photos of Najib and Rosmah. If we do not agree with Najib and Rosmah, the decent thing to do is to have a dialogue, consultation or a discussion with them. All Malaysians must view the act of stepping on one’s photo and the show of the posterior to another person as unacceptable. The offenders need to be taken to task.
Gabungan JANJI call upon all sectors – the politicians, media and the authorities to stop politicising the event, Janji Demokrasi, and to recognise that there is now a new way to celebrate Merdeka Day – with the people.

Thank you.

GABUNGAN JANJI
