How Malays voted at GE13

How Malays voted
Speaking at a news conference a day after the release of the results of the recent Malaysian general elections, Prime Minister Najib Razak stressed that: “On the whole, the people’s decision this time shows a trend of voting polarization…This worries the government, because if it’s not handled well, it could spark tension.” These comments were made in light of the premier’s knee-jerk observation that the increasingly politicised Chinese community have now swung towards the opposition unlike Malays who are firmly in support of the Barisan Nasional (BN).
Compelling as such reasoning can be, Najib Razak’s reflex reaction towards BN’s worst defeat since 1969 masks the deeper nuances of voting patterns and trends in Malaysia. While the results of the 13th general elections (GE13) provides evidence that the Chinese-Malay divide in Malaysian politics have indeed manifest itself at the ballot box, there are other developments within the Malay populace in the country that have become more apparent and may follow a more protracted course in the coming years.
The rural-urban divide is the most obvious phenomenon that has emerged among the Malay electorate. Cash, food and other gifts dished out by the BN to the rural Malays, coupled by the promise of more development projects have yielded expected outcomes in terms of the strong support shown by the rural Malays for the party. While such carrot and stick tactics worked well with the rural folk – at least for this year’s elections – and have found expression in terms of BN’s victory in rural parts of Malaysia, Malays in urban areas showed opposing reactions. Good governance, fair and clean elections and putting an end to corruption are issues that the establishment have found difficult to address to meet up with rising expectations of the urban Malays. The upshot of this is declining Malay support in urban towns such as Kota Laksamana (Malacca), Kota Alam Shah (Selangor) and Pasir Bedamar (Perak).
The elections also signalled the looming decline of the old-generation communal-based religious elites in place of young, pluralistic and dynamic preachers and activists in politics. The defeats suffered by the once-famed Mohamad Sabu, Haron Din dan Husam Musa of the Islamic party, PAS, are clear indications of this. Even though the rising BN ulama, Ustaz Fathul Bari, had lost his bid to win over Sanglang, the thin margin of 121 votes clearly showed that the Malays are open to accepting a new crop of urbanite members from the laity into the parliament. Nik Abduh Nik Aziz’s easy win over Perkasa’s Ibrahim Ali drives this point home and much more.
The complete wipe-out of Perkasa in the elections by two PAS candidates bears testimony that Malays in Malaysia are generally not keen on extreme racialised politics, particularly the kind promoted by the BN old-guards. Indeed, given a choice between Islamised politics with an eye towards building a multicultural Malaysia to one that advocates Malay dominance at the expense of other races in the country, Malays are keen to see the former in place.
Celebrating multiculturalism does not however entail an easy acceptance of celebrities in politics. The losses suffered by two all-time favourites in the Malaysian entertainment industry, Wan Aishah of PAS and Dayangku Intan of PKR, sends a strong message to Pakatan Rakyat that Malay politics have matured beyond the lure of superstars. What Malays want which have somewhat fell on deaf ears are people who can deliver beyond sound and fury. For most Malays, it is the candidates’ ability to manage their respective constituencies rather than their vocal cords that colour their voting behavior.
Above all, Malay voting patterns in GE13 exhibited a strong predisposition towards political families. Sons, daughters and those who share familial ties with known politicians on either side of the political spectrum gained much headway in their respective constituencies with Mukhriz Mahathir clinching the Ayer Hitam seat for the BN and sworn in as the Menteri Besar of Kedah. Nur Izzah Anwar Ibrahim, in turn, slayed a BN giant for the second time at Lembah Pantai, enhancing her image as the “Princess of Reform” and soon-to-be Leader of the PKR. These two significant examples, along with Nik Abduh Nik Aziz and, to a lesser extent, Khairy Jamaludin, make obvious the fact that emotional bonds between Malay leaders in Malaysia could easily be passed on from one generation to another, influencing Malay voting patterns during the elections.
Najib Razak openly mentioned that his new government “will undertake a process of national reconciliation so we can set aside any extremism and communalism with policies based on moderation.” The recent election has shown to us that the point made by the Prime Minister is rather belated. Malays in Malaysia have and will continually move along the path of moderation, shunning the extremist and communalist tendencies that are bound to emerge along the way. GE13 has laid bare the end of money politics and made it plainly obvious that the days of old school racial politics are numbered. The new breed of Malays have their eyes now set on cosmopolitan leaders, regardless of which party they are from, leaders whose forebears have had Malay interests in mind and, above and beyond that, the interests of all Malaysians at heart.

When Najib failed as a statesman

CARTOONKINI

COMMENT Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak likes to brand himself as a perfect mixture between a "politician" and a "statesman".

There is no denying Najib's political wit. After all, politics has been all about survival, and despite many lingering questions over his own integrity, Najib has survived long enough to become the premier of the country for another five years, barring an anticipated leadership challenge.

However, the measure of a statesman can be defined easily by one's ideology and public statements, and that is something Najib has to reflect upon and admit - at least in the confines of his own office - that he has failed miserably at.

NONEThe measure of a statesman is determined by their reaction to critical situations - especially in scenarios where he is leading a highly divided demographic - and Najib had just undone all the work he had undertaken in his four years, including his coining of the ‘1Malaysia’ slogan- with his horrible gaffe in branding the election results on Sunday as a result of a "Chinese tsunami".

While talking about a process of national reconciliation - whatever that was supposed to mean - Najib followed up immediately in the next sentence by blaming the result on the Chinese community, and even more dangerously, appearing to brand the opposition movement as a result of "extremist ideology".

But this is not the first time Najib had heftily contradicted himself or failed to act with any form of ‘civility’, a term that he likes to use liberally without even understanding the real etiquette of civility.

Ever since assuming premiership four years ago, Najib trailblazed into Pakatan Rakyat-led states to make a case for the states of Penang, Selangor and Kelantan to be returned to the BN fold. And he went about it in the most condescending way imaginable.

Dodging any public dialogue, forum or debate on policies, he stood on the comfort of BN-backed platforms and threw baseless allegations and wilfully distorted facts about Pakatan administrations - he was one of those politicians making a cacophony of noise with desperate hopes that his shouts will muffle out any dissent or counter arguments.

He was busy telling the people that only BN can do a proper job in these states. He made assessments that Pakatan is not fit to lead these wealthy states, without outlining any concrete reasons.

BN knows best?

This man was telling the people that BN knows best. But this was the same man that during a national day gathering said that the "the days of the government knows best is now over". If he can't see his own hypocrisy, Najib must be as delusional as ever in branding himself as a statesman.

And when it dawned upon him on the wee hours of May 6 that he failed to obtain a two-thirds majority - a promise he made to Umno and BN without as much as assessing the ground sentiments - and that he failed miserably in Selangor despite being the elections director for his party there, Najib turned his ire on the Chinese community.

After spending four years condescending the people for having chosen Pakatan in 82 parliamentary seats, he is now blaming the people for having voted for Pakatan in 89 parliamentary seats.

I was one of those who was expecting that regardless of the election outcome, there would be civility and magnanimity in the course of conversation in the political arena if BN was denied a two-thirds majority for a second time.

It was understandable for the old guards to spend time harping on minor slip-ups for the 2008 election results and continue believing they are given the eternal honour of managing the country. But being denied a two-thirds for a second time means they needed to look for a new excuse - or even better, a full acceptance that a two-party system has emerged in Malaysia and must be embraced.

But Najib, known as a moderate leading a flock of right-wing groups, walked straight into the annals of right-wing extremism by cooking up an excuse that will now last and linger on for months and maybe years to come - that the Chinese had turned against BN because they have been taken in by promises and even suggested "extremist ideologies" that must be put aside.

NONEAnyone who had followed Malaysian politics for long enough knows what he was referring to - though the million dollar question is whether Najib knows the kind of conversation he is creating with his statement.

Racial tension and racial divide will only play into the hands of Umno, MIC and MCA. It will make them relevant again. And with MCA's refusal to take up government posts and party president Chua Soi Lek's (left) statement that the result would mean the birth of a "two-race system", it is clear that the BN leaders are training their guns on the Chinese community, even laced with a sense of vengeance.

This is not good for the nation - not after an election that should have officially heralded a new age for a two-party system.

Instead of focusing, thanking and be grateful to the 47 percent of the population that had voted for BN and helped in its course to attain 133 parliamentary seats - Najib focused on the other divide of the population that voted against him - and worse, failed to respect their choices.

He started his new premiership by making enemies, and not friends.

Najib has just missed the bus to become a statesman. And no matter how much he does to repair the damage over the next five years, this statement - even though it was uttered with finesse and some sense of intellectual ambiguity - will be remembered.

3 May 2013 23:55

3 May 2013 12:55

Survey: 42% wants to give Pakatan a chance

6:12PM May 3, 2013
A poll by Merdeka Centre found that 42 percent of respondents believe that Pakatan Rakyat should be given a chance to govern the country.

In contrast, 41 percent said that only BN can govern the country. Thirteen percent of respondents were unsure and four percent refused to reveal their stand.

The survey involved telephone interviews with 1,600 respondents from the peninsular selected through random stratified sampling.

Rural and female respondents were more likely to believe that only BN can govern Malaysia, whereas males and urban voters are more inclined towards Pakatan.

Older respondents were found to be more likely to support BN. However, the level of support would drop in tandem with the age groups. For Pakatan, the reverse is true.

These reverse trends were also clear in terms of age household income. It is noted that low income earners are more inclined towards BN, while higher income earners side with Pakatan.

BN can also count on support from government servants and those who are not formally employed, although Pakatan enjoys support from those working in the private sector and those who are self-employed.

In addition, those with no Internet access were also more likely to support BN. The reverse is true for those with Internet access.

Meanwhile, those who have voted before are equally split, but first-time voters are more inclined towards the Pakatan coalition.

Najib's ratings slide, BR1M not working

5:27PM May 3, 2013
As the country heads for its 13th general election on Sunday, pollster Merdeka Centre’s latest poll has found BN chief Najib Abdul Razak’s approval rating sliding down a further three percent from its last poll.

najib announcing affordable house penang 300413 01The survey carried out among voters in peninsular Malaysia between April 28 to May 2 also placed Pakatan Rakyat ahead of BN in terms of the favoured party to form the government.

Najib's popularity has taken a slight dip from 64 percent when the last poll was conducted in March, to 61 percent now just days before the country heads to polls.

Merdeka Centre said that the figure reflects the slide in the "feel good" factor that was previously generated by the large-scale distribution of Bantuan Rakyat 1Malaysia (BR1M) and also other forms of cash handouts.

Concerns over the economy topped the list of issues that voters wanted to hear being discussed, at 25 percent.

Marginal seats will decide winner

Based on the survey results, Merdeka Center said that the emerging victor in the election will be determined by which side manages to snag a larger pie from the 46 marginal parliamentary seats across the country - all of which fall within a 3 percent vote-shift margin.

Thirty-four of the marginal seats are located in peninsular Malaysia while six each are in Sabah and Sarawak.

Apart from the marginal seats, the centre predicts that BN will win an estimated 81 parliamentary seats while Pakatan will win an estimated 89.

The survey was carried out among 1,600 registered voters via telephone interviews, with 59 percent of respondents being Malay, 32 percent Chinese and 9 percent Indians.

(This is democracy in Malaysia style)。”

Mega Pakatan rallies shake Johor BN bastion

JOHOR Yesterday's public holiday opened up for Pakatan Rakyat's top leaders a golden opportunity to hold several mammoth ceramah in Johor, attracting tens of thousands and taking its momentum to new heights in the southern BN fortress.

NONEThe ceramah at an outdoor car park of a shopping mall at Gelang Patah pulled in some 70,000 Chinese-majority crowd, breaking the attendance of 60,000 people recorded the previous night at the same venue.

Besides the unprecedented attendance, the total donation raised for the day reached a whopping RM263,328.80, comprising RM173,328.80 collected from the ceramah alone and RM90,000 from the series of events held throughout the day at the car park.

NONEIt was a clear sign of the overwhelming support of the Chinese electorate in southern Johor as many came from neighbouring constituencies such as Kulai, Johor Bahru, Pasir Gudang and Pulai, which Pakatan aims to wrest from the BN in this general election.

Another ceramah targeting the Malay crowd was held simultaneously at the outdoor car park of Tan Sri Dato Haji Hassan Yunos stadium in Johor Bahru downtown, attracting some 10,000 people, making it the largest Malay-majority ceramah in the state since nomination day on April 20.

Pakatan has been struggling to garner the support of Malay voters in the BN stronghold state to meet its target of 38 percent, and this ceramah showed that still much work needs to be done in the last three days of the campaign.
Anti-establishment phenomenon
Two earlier ceramah in the town of Batu Pahat, located in central Johor, and Muar, in northern Johor, also recorded attendance of about 10,000 and 15,000 respectively with most present being Chinese.

Those were further indicators that the anti-establishment sentiment among Chinese is a statewide phenomenon.

NONEFrom the plate number of cars parked around the ceramah venues, it is believed that a significant number of participants were outstation voters who had returned home to vote on Sunday.

Yesterday was Labour Day, a national holiday, and this allowed outstation voters to enjoy a five-day break until Sunday by taking an additional two-day leave.

PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim, DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng and PAS vice-president Salahuddin Ayub took turns to address the crowd in most of the ceramah, projecting an united multiracial front.

During the ceramah in Johor Bahru, it was clear that Anwar attempted to use his spectacular oratory skill to allay the fear of Malays harboured about the DAP, particularly Kit Siang.
Opposition's 1M'sia show

Describing the DAP supremo as "the people's fighter", Anwar stressed that there is no reason to fear Kit Siang simply because he is assertive in pursuing his political principles.

NONE"Some civil servants told me they are worried because Chinese now are more persistent in politics... Why are you afraid of him? Because he is smart? Because he is brave? Because he is assertive? Or because he works hard?

"(And because of that) you don't elect such a person but Malay leaders who are stupid?" he asked.

Anwar stressed that Pakatan needs all capable leaders to form a team to rule the nation regardless of race.

Anti-corruption and fair treatment to all ethnic communities based on provisions enshrined in the federal constitution were highlighted by all the top leaders in their speeches.

Another favourite topic among them was former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

NONESpeaking to the crowd in Gelang Patah, Anwar urged them to prove Mahathir wrong by voting for Kit Siang.

"Mahathir said let's bury him (Kit Siang) in Gelang Patah and bury Anwar in Permatang Pauh. But Mahathir, I'm not (caretaker prime minister) Najib (Abdul Razak) who has no courage to rebut you."

He continued to lambast his former boss at the ceramah at Johor Bahru.

"I ask Mahathir, you are 87 years old already. You want to bury Anwar and bury Kit Siang, what about your own grave?"

But he was quick to stress that he never says he wants Mahathir to die as reported by the BN-controlled media.

"I want him to live. I want him to watch TV3 on May 6 (to see the results of GE13)," he said and hoops of laughter rolled across the floor.
