PKR calls EC chief ‘big liar’ over Selangor voter roll flap

September 22, 2012
Abdul Aziz had accused PKR of lying in its audit of Selangor’s electoral roll.
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 22 — PKR has labelled Election Commission (EC) chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof a “great liar” for saying the party had misrepresented facts when claiming of discrepancies in Selangor’s voter roll.
PKR secretary-general Datuk Saifuddin Nasution stood by his party’s recent audit report, insisting that the exercise had not been carried out just to discredit the EC.
“He (Abdul Aziz) can come up with whatever excuse he wants. I maintain that our report was credible,” the Machang MP told The Malaysian Insider.
During a media briefing yesterday, Abdul Aziz had accused PKR of lying in its audit of Selangor’s electoral roll, saying the party had misrepresented facts when exposing alleged discrepancies in voter registration.
The EC chief said during a recent Bernama TV programme with Saifuddin, the PKR leader had shown reporters a “cropped” photograph of a “pondok” (small hut) in Kampung Sungai Pusu in Gombak and alleged that there were 18 voters registered to that single address.
“I asked him to show us that photograph and we took it for further study. But when the EC went to the area, it turned out that the hut was actually a parking lot for motorcycles and there are actually 32 families living in that one village.
“The photograph had been cropped,” Abdul Aziz had told the media, saying that this proved the opposition party had lied when claiming of discrepancies in Selangor’s voter roll.
Saifuddin said the party stands by its report.
He later showed the media photographs taken by the EC’s officers during their visit to Kampung Sungai Pusu.
According to Abdul Aziz, some of the 32 families residing in the small village use the small hut for its correspondence address, where the post box is located.
But Saifuddin denied today that the EC chief had ever taken the photographs from him to later verify, saying during the programme he had merely shown him the picture on his I-Pad.
“In that sense, I can say that he is a great liar. I merely showed him the picture.
“Unless his memory is so great, he managed to go to the same place to try and prove us wrong.
“I maintain that the address we showed him is a hut and it is not a parking lot.
“I maintain that our source, our report, is credible,” he said.
Saifuddin added that he has already instructed party workers to prepare a statement on the matter.
He said he may even hold a press conference at the site tomorrow.
Saifuddin also recalled that during the same programme, Abdul Aziz had repeatedly asked for a copy of PKR’s audit of Selangor’s voter roll.
While the PKR leader said the party’s main purpose for the audit was to ensure the roll was free of discrepancies, he said it was the EC’s role to search for these mistakes.
“The reason for their existence is to conduct polls and ensure the roll is clean. They should assist us, not look at us like we are enemies.
“So only if they are prepared to accept criticism, we are prepared to work with them,” he said.
The Selangor Pakatan Rakyat (PR) government recently declared that it will not hold state elections when the federal Barisan Nasional (BN) calls them unless the EC is able to show the gazetted electoral roll to be used in GE13 has been cleared of dubious entries.
In its latest electoral statistics gazetted last August 16 made available to The Malaysian Insider, the EC recorded the number of registered voters as 13,052,374 people, out of whom 12,778,127 fall into the category of ordinary voters while 274,247 are recorded as absent voters. The latter group encompasses the armed forces, the police and overseas voters.
Selangor recorded the largest number of overseas voters, currently standing at 579 people, while the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur has the highest number of absent voters with 40,543 people. This is followed by Perak with 38,367 voters and Johor a distant third with 25,058 voters.

This Is NOT a Counterfeit Bill

22 Sep 2012
By  | The Exchange

In this age of debate about the value, or non-value, of the dollar, we've encountered a little something from the past that you probably don't see every day unless you're a currency collector -- a 1935 series U.S. dollar silver certificate.
Peter Gorenstein, executive producer for The Daily Ticker and Breakout, found one in his change. If you've not come across one of these in person before, you might at first think it's counterfeit, but it is real, and you can certainly buy things with it. Compare the 1935 certificate to a modern, 2009 series, Federal Reserve note below:
Old Dollar Front
New Dollar Front
Among several different features that stand out between the two is a very prominent one: The promise on the old bill below George Washington's portrait that the certificate is equivalent to "One Dollar In Silver Payable To The Bearer On Demand." We know that some of our readers love the idea of investing in hard assets and of hard assets backing the U.S. currency. But despite what this dollar says, you can't get silver for it from the government. Your ability to redeem the certificates for silverwith the U.S. Treasury came to an end in 1968.
Now have a look at the back. Notice anything missing from the old one on top?
Old Dollar Back
New Dollar Back
The phrase "In God We Trust" is absent. The 1935 series certificate was the last paper currency in the nation whose run began without the language -- it had been used and dropped previously on certain American coins. However, it was added later in the series, which was printed for several years. The bill we're showing here is the 1935F, without the wording, but it can be found on some subsequent G notes, first appearing in 1961, and on all of those in the H run, the last of the 1935s. (Other, newer bill series first carried the phrase in 1957.)
If you take this to a regular merchant right now, you can plan on it getting you $1 worth of goods, the same as your current Federal Reserve note. You might have a little more luck if you sell it privately than you would taking it to the neighborhood grocery store. Still, despite the note being somewhat unusual in 2012, it doesn't qualify as rare, so don't expect a dealer to make you rich for parting ways with it.
A quick check on eBay lists 197 individual lots containing the 1935F.  The cheapest single certificate the online auction site has at the moment is listed for an opening bid of 99 cents. That's followed by offers of $1.04, $1.25 and on up. The most expensive item is a pack of 50 of the 1935Fs, with a price of $4,977.77. So it's a little nugget if you're interested in collectibles, and it's fun to compare. Or it's a stark reminder of what used to be.

Bersih protesters had no chance to disperse, says Suhakam panel chief

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 21 — The Human Rights Commission (Suhakam) panel chief today said that “there was not much room to run” for protesters during the Bersih rally on April 28, disputing earlier police testimony of having enough roads open for participants to disperse.
Prof Datuk Dr Khaw Lake Tee told reporters after the panel made an on-site visit that the exits assigned by the police to allow people to disperse were further away, leaving only two narrow lanes nearby.
“Police said there were a lot of areas where protesters could have dispersed and we were looking for that.
“We only saw two; small lane near Citin Hotel and Masjid India Jalan Tun Perak. There was not much room to run,” Khaw said.
The three-hour walking site visit began at Dataran Merdeka and included visits to the alleged holding area in front of the Royal Selangor Club, Citin Hotel in Jalan Melayu, and Jalan Hang Lekiu, three locations where witnesses have testified of police brutality on the day of the rally.
The inquiry resumes next Monday with further testimony from the police.

Bernama admits PM photo doctored

September 20, 2012
Screenshot of doctored photo from a Facebook post circulating on the Internet.
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 20 — National news agency Bernama said today an internal investigation showed a photograph of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak it released to newspapers last Saturday was doctored.
"Initial checks revealed that the flawed picture was discovered at the source from where it was sent," Bernama Editor-in-Chief Datuk Yong Soo Heong said in a report carried by the national news agency this evening.
He said further investigations were ongoing to determine the motive of the person concerned and whether there were elements of sabotage, Yong said.
"We are viewing this matter seriously and will not hesitate to take appropriate action against those responsible for the irregularities.
"Bernama always strives to maintain high standards of professionalism and takes a serious view of workplace integrity," he stressed.
Bernama's admission is not only embarrassing to the news agency but could also hurt the prime minister's image as well.
The publication of the photograph in various newspapers had been criticised online with a number of blogs and websites suggesting the background image of the crowd in the photograph was the same as that of another picture.
In the photograph, the prime minister is seen greeting well-wishers at a public gathering in his Pekan constituency.
Bernama had also denied a separate allegation that it had doctored another photograph of function hosted by the PM earlier this month.

Freeze Taib’s accounts, governments told

FMT Staff
 | September 19, 2012
A Swiss NGO has lumped Taib Mahmud together with 'money launderers' Indonesian president Suharto and Philippines' Marcos.
KUCHING: Swiss NGO, Bruno Manser Fund (BMF), has reiterated its call for governments and banks around the globe to freeze the assets of Sarawak Chief Minister Taib Mahmud and his family.
It has also called on anti-corruption and anti-money-laundering authorities worldwide to investigate the Taib family’s business activities.
In a statement issued in conjunction with the release of its report ‘The Taib Timber Mafia. Facts and Figures on Politically Exposed Persons from Sarawak, Malaysia’ in Brussels, Belgium earlier today, BMF said the Taibs could be compared to Indonesia’s president Suharto and president Ferdinand Marcos of the Philippines.
“The Taibs are being compared to the Suharto and Marcos clans who have also stolen billions from their countries.
“According to Transparency International, former Indonesian president Suharto had embezzled US$15 to US$35 billion, while former Philippines president Ferdinand Marcos is thought to have stolen between US$20 and US$900 billion.
“We want the governments and banks around the globe to freeze Taib family assets.
“These assets should be frozen and restituted to the people of Sarawak, and the Taib family and their co-conspirators should be prosecuted for corruption, abuse of public funds, fraud, money laundering, tax evasion and other related crimes,” noted the statement, alluding to the report which detailed Taib and his family’s extensive wealth.
According to the report, which was released to coincide with the visit by the Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister, Bernard Dompok, to the European Union, Taib and his 20-member clan are worth US$21 billion (RM64 billion).
And the extensive wealth, the report claims, was derived “through the almost complete political and economic control of Sarawak” over the past three decades.
“Taib Mahmud has systematically plundered a country once rich in natural resources, particularly oil, gas and timber. While the proceeds of the oil and gas extraction are mostly benefiting Malaysia’s federal government, the Sarawak state government enjoys total autonomy as to the use of the state’s forest resources and state lands.
“The Bruno Manser Fund estimates the combined net worth of 20 Taib family members at close to US$21 billion, which have been acquired through the almost complete political and economic control of Sarawak, over three decades.
“In particular, the Taibs have established monopolies over the granting of timber and plantation concessions, the export of timber to third countries, the maintenance of public roads as well as over the production and sale of cement and a number of other construction materials,” it said.
Taib’s assets being monitored
Taib, an impoverished carpenter’s son, has been helming Sarawak since 1981.
According to the report, his personal wealth now stands at US$15 billion (RM45 billion), making him the richest man in Malaysia.
The second richest man in Malaysia is his brother Onn Mahmud with a net worth of US$1.5 billion (RM4.5 billion).
Both have been closely linked to logging scandals dating back to 1981, the year Taib assumed the chief minister’s post.
The report cited two key scandals – one in 2007 and another in 2008.
“In 2007, a scandal exposed by the Japanese tax authorities revealed that tens of millions of US dollars had been paid in secret, illegal kickbacks by Japanese shipping companies exporting timber from Sarawak.
“The money was paid directly to Hong Kong companies linked to the chief minister’s brother, Onn Mahmud. The Japanese cartel concluded an agreement in 1981 with Malaysia’s Dewan Niaga Sarawak regarding lumber transport.
“Dewan Niaga is a state-affiliated agency in charge of lumber export control and is headed by Onn Mahmud, one of Taib’s brothers.
“In 2008, Indonesian newspaper, Tribun Pontianak, revealed that around 30 shipments of illegal Indonesian logs were imported into Sarawak and re-exported to other countries every month. Chief Minister Taib Mahmud was implicated in this timber scam,” the report noted.
‘Thief minister’
Taib is now aggressively pursuing his pet project – the multi-billion dollar “Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy” (SCORE) – an industrialisation project comprising 50 hydroelectric dams, oil palm plantations, smelter plants and mining projects.
The projects are being widely opposed by the local communities. The dams are set to displace tens of thousands of indigenous people and will ultimately benefit the Taib family and his close political allies.
“Taib is regarded by many Malaysians as being the ‘thief minister’ of Sarawak.
“In June 2011, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission [MACC] announced that Taib was under investigation for allegations of timber corruption.
“The UK, Swiss, German and Australian governments are now monitoring Taib assets abroad and the ongoing investigation in Malaysia,” said the report.
Taib, meanwhile, has denied BMF’s claims that he is being investigated by the Swiss authorities.
The BMF had alleged on its website that the Swiss Financial Marketing Supervisory Authority is investigating Taib’s alleged assets in Swiss banks.
Taib refuted the allegations, describing them as “utterly false and evidently politically motivated”.
He said BMF had a track record of making “scurrilous and scandalous” allegations against the state government.
“Therefore, BMF’s false allegations about assets held in Switzerland by me are a continuation of their malicious efforts to smear the state, the government and the leaders,” he told members of the Sarawak Legislative Assembly sitting in June last year.

Pakatan: Arrests of Nik Aziz, Guan Eng picture-stompers ‘insincere’

September 17, 2012
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 17 — Pakatan Rakyat (PR) leaders today dismissed the arrests of several individuals who stomped and urinated on the photographs of their leaders as a mere knee-jerk response from the authorities, following harsh criticism from the public over their handling of similar incidents during National Day last month.
PKR vice-president N Surendran (picture) pointed out that the arrests had only been made after the Home Ministry and the police were slammed for the speedy action they had taken against the group of youths who stomped on Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s photograph during a street celebration of Malaysia’s 55th National Day at Dataran Merdeka.
“The only reason (Home Minister Datuk Seri) Hishammuddin (Hussein) has gone after those who did that to opposition leaders is because of public criticism on the one sided way the police have gone after those who did the same to the PM’s photos,” Surendran told The Malaysian Insider.
DAP national publicity chief Tony Pua echoed his colleague’s sentiments, and said: “The urinating act was more than a few months ago. Have they been charged?”
“Or are these ‘arrests’ afterthoughts after Malaysians complain at the police bias of investigating only when Najib’s picture is ‘damaged’?” he asked.
“If Hishammuddin is truly unbiased, then scores of people would have been charged and found guilty to date for Umno and Perkasa members have trampled, torn, burnt and desecrated on pictures of PR leaders since 2008,” he added.
PAS leader and Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad lamented if the police had taken action against the perpetrators “from the beginning”, it would have “stopped all these crazy political gangsterism and activities which are not condoned by anybody with a reasonable and sound mind”.
“They (the police) have to wait until the PM’s photos are stepped on, and they’re criticised for not taking action, then only they acted... It is a bit disappointing,” he said.
“It shows they have double standards and are not serious in overcoming the problem of gangsterism and unethical political action,” he added.
Surendran, however, urged that no criminal action be taken upon those arrested.
“We believe leaders must be open to criticism by the people and even if the criticisms are rude and distasteful as in the case of the fellow who urinated on photographs of PR leaders,” he said.
He added the coalition was against criminal action taken against those involved as it was “wrong, because under the federal constitution there is freedom of expression”.
“As long as it’s non-violent, don’t turn it into a criminal matter. Like those who jumped on the PM’s photos, it is distasteful but not criminal.
“It may be rude, distasteful and disgusting but we must defend the people’s right to do it. They are both not criminal matters.”
A firestorm erupted last month after several individuals were recorded tearing up posters bearing images of the prime minister, his wife and Election Commission chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof at the “Janji Demokrasi” rally on August 30.
Several other people also were spotted waving a flag with an alternative design — now identified as the Sang Saka Malaya – instead of the Jalur Gemilang at the National Day bash.
Bukit Aman’s CID director Datuk Seri Mohd Bakri Zinin told The Malaysian Insider that the police were probing the two separate incidents under the Sedition Act — despite Putrajaya’s decision to repeal the controversial law that has been widely panned as a tool to curb political dissent.
Mohd Bakri said the police were probing the flag incident as an attempt to incite hatred with intent to create public disorder under Section 4 (1)(a) of the Sedition Act 1948.
He added that stepping on pictures of Najib and wife were considered offences under Sections 290 and 504 of the Penal Code for being public nuisances and intentionally causing insult with an intent to provoke break the public peace, respectively.
Those convicted under Section 290 may be fined up to RM400 while those found guilty under Section 504 are liable to be jailed up to two years or fined, or both.
However, Section 4 (1)(a) of the Sedition Act prescribes a mandatory jail term of three years or a fine of up to RM5,000 for first offenders, which is subsequently raised to five years’ jail for repeat offences.

With 13m voters now, urgent call to clean up electoral roll

September 15, 2012
File photo of people checking their status at a polling booth in Kuching in last year’s Sarawak state elections.
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 15 — With 13 million registered voters to date, the Election Commission (EC) now faces increasing pressure to clean up the electoral roll and conduct separate polls for areas under both Barisan Nasional (BN) and Pakatan Rakyat (PR).
The Selangor PR government has openly declared it will not hold state elections when the federal BN calls them unless the EC is able to show the gazetted electoral roll to be used in GE13 has been cleared of dubious entries.
Kuala Lumpur FT also has the highest number of absent voters from within the ranks of the armed forces, totalling 24,979 people, while Selangor has the largest number of absent voters from within the police force, with 16,525 people.
The electoral law provides for absent voters to cast their ballots through the post even if the person is stationed within the voting constituency. This lack of transparency in the voting process has led to various allegations of gerrymandering and tampering with the ballot papers.
DAP Youth chief Anthony Loke has urged the EC to speed up cleaning its voter registry.
In the last general election in 2008, the ruling BN coalition succeeded in grabbing only one out of 11 parliamentary seats in the Kuala Lumpur FT, namely Setiawangsa. The DAP won five, PKR scored four and PAS took the remaining one — leading to the most successful partnership among the three opposition parties in the last decade.
DAP Youth chief Anthony Loke has urged the EC to speed up cleaning its voter registry, saying the Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) on electoral reform had stated that it would only take four months to do so.
“It has been four months since the report was out but we are still receiving complaints, that’s why we want the EC to speed up the cleaning process.
“We urge the EC to show commitment in this cleaning process, and will continue to press them to update the data or explain this issue,” said Loke, who is both a federal and state lawmaker in Negri Sembilan.
He said cleaning the electoral roll was still being carried out and the Malaysian Microelectronic System Institute (MIMOS) had found dubious voter names in the roll.
“In the parliamentary report, MIMOS found there were 324 addresses registered with more than 100 voters, and 938 addresses with more than 51 to 100 voters.
“The overall voters were more than 100,000,” he said.
However, the deputy chairman of the EC, Datuk Wan Ahmad Wan Omar, has made it known that he disagrees with Selangor’s suggestion of separate poll dates for the state election.
“This should not happen. We must think of the interest of all parties and not just political interest,” he said in broadcast programme “Hello Malaysia” shown live earlier this week on Bernama TV.
The one-hour interview was titled “Isu Bubar DUN: Implikasi SPR (Dissolving state assemblies: The implication for the EC)”, hosted by Sherkawi Jirim.
Wan Ahmad also argued that the cost of conducting elections would balloon substantially should there be separate elections for state and federal seats.
He pointed out that general elections cost about RM400 million while conducting a separate state election for Selangor alone would consume some RM50 million.
The 13th general election, which must be called by next April, is said to be the closest race for power between the mammoth and undefeated BN coalition and the fledgling PR bloc since 1969 when the opposition made landmark wins but which was followed by the May 13 racial bloodbath, marking the darkest chapter in the country’s history since independence in 1957.
The BN was denied its customary two-thirds hold on Parliament by the DAP-PKR-PAS parties which swept an unprecedented 81 out of 222 seats in the lawmaking house besides ceding four key states — Selangor, Penang, Kedah and Perak.
The BN managed to regain Perak subsequently after three state PR lawmakers declared themselves independents and swore allegiance to the grand old coalition.

Assault on Bersih protesters, journalists ‘unacceptable’, says senior cop

UPDATED @ 02:20:00 PM 13-09-2012
September 13, 2012
File photo of several policemen detaining a sole Bersih supporter (yellow T-shirt) at the April 28 rally.
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 13 — A senior police officer said today that the alleged assault by policemen of protesters and journalists during the April 28 Bersih rally here was “contemptuous, ill-mannered and unacceptable”.
Deputy city CID chief ACP Khairi Ahrasa said this when testifying at the Human Rights Commission (Suhakam) inquiry into the rally for electoral reforms that descended into chaotic scenes and violence.
He also told the inquiry that policemen should not have arrested protesters who had dispersed by dragging them from restaurants.
“These actions are contemptuous, ill-mannered and totally unacceptable. And I will look into it and take action,” Khairi said.
He also said the media’s role was historically established and police should not have interfered since they were only doing their duty on that day.
“In my briefing on that day, I told everyone of the freedom of the press to do their job and not to harm them as these incidents would harm our (the police) image,” he added.
When asked whether there was a need for police to brief the media before an event, Khairi disagreed and said it was not needed.
“They (the media) have been around since before Merdeka. Instead, we (the police) must understand their freedoms and should not be afraid of what they report,” he added.
However, Khairi said there should be a memorandum of understanding between the media and the police to limit where journalists could go during rallies to avoid they being harmed.
“But for this to happen would need feedback from both sides,” he added.
Khairi’s testimony ended proceedings today.
Inquiry panel head Datuk Dr Khaw Lake Tee said the secretariat will announce the next sitting at a later date, which may include a site visit to the police depot used to hold detainees on April 28.

UK Press Reports “Diplomatic Row” Over William & Kate’s Sabah Visit

11 Sep 2012
Malaysian demonstrators gathered outside St James’ Palace in London to protest at the visit to Musa Aman last week
Britain’s major newspaper, the Daily Mail, has described the planned visit by the royal couple, Prince William and Kate, to Sabah as “the first diplomatic row of their fledgeling royal careers” today.
The reason? Because the person waiting in Sabah to greet them on Friday is Chief Minister Musa Aman, now “implicated in a criminal investigation in to alleged laundering of profit from illegal logging”, says the paper.
The matter has already been picked up by Malaysia’s leading online news portalMalaysiakini and it marks the growing concern amongst onlookers over the decision to encourage the environmentally-friendly prince to endorse the dubious eco-credentials of the man who has presided over the destruction of Sabah’s forests over the last 20 years.
The Malaysian human rights organisation Suaram has written a letter directly to the Royal Palace and the Foreign Office expressing concerns about the visit and deploring the engagement with Musa. Environment NGOs have also added their concerns at the failure to confront ‘greenwash’ by a Sabah government that has licensed large areas of once protected forests for destruction.
Don’t be fooled by Musa William and Kate!
PR boost!
But, for Musa the visit by the young couple has clearly been a godsend. Over past weeks he has been struggling to dampen down criticism during this sensitive pre-election period, and has  refused to step aside in the face of no less than three separate corruption investigations in different countries (Malaysia, Hong Kong and Switzerland).
A mound of evidence has also been published showing how millions of dollars in kickbacks have been processed through bank accounts managed by his nominees.
However, the British Foreign Office has been adamant in its refusal to step back from the visit, which is seen to offer great potential for trading opportunities, including arms sales, to the Malaysian Government.
Last week Malaysian anti-corruption campaigners waved placards outside St James’ Palace in London condemning the visit and calling for William and Kate not to be fooled by Musa’s ‘Greenwash’ and not to lend him a valuable PR boost by appearing to endorse him on the eve of a general election.
Pressure has increased in the face of the latest revelation, which is an official response by the Swiss Federal Government to questions asked by the MP Carlos Sommaruga about the Hong Kong investigation into Musa’s assets:
“Switzerland has provided legal assistance in the case of MUSA Bin Aman et al. to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) of the People’s Republic of China for criminal collusion in active and passive corruption” [Swiss response]
Musa is also named in connection with an official Swiss criminal investigation launched into the role of UBS in laundering the illegal timber money, announced last week and the Malaysian Prime Minister, Najib Razak, has acknowledged that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) investigation into the same transactions also involves Musa.
Backfiring – the Wills & Kate visit to Sabah has turned a blind eye to Musa’s timber corruption
‘Greenwash’ can’t hide the truth
Mannan (left) hob nobs with Prince Charles about Sabah’s supposed environment credentials at a WWF conference in St James’ Palace
The royal visit was clinched in the wake of a“mission” last year by Sabah Forestry Head Sam Mannan to St James’ Palace promoting Sabah as an ‘eco-friendly’ state.
Mannan has worked assiduously to promote an image of Sabah where deforestation is ‘slowing’ and precious areas are being rescued from logging.
Just before the visit he announced amidst great fanfare that another large area would now be put under ‘protection’.
However, yet again it is an area that has already been logged, just as areas that had been ear-marked for protection under the WWF ‘Heart of Borneo Treaty’ were also deliberately logged by Musa and Mannan before the agreement was signed.
Sabah timber insiders say that the driving force behind the destruction of the state forests over the past 20 years has been the corruption and greed of Musa, who has accepted kickbacks in return for issuing licences in areas that were once protected.
Forest Protection? – evidence from Sabah’s restricted Forest Department maps shows how Musa’s greed has destroyed last remaining reserves. Zone 23 was a Protected Area of virgin forest in the 2005 map (left), but by 2009 (right) it had been re-categorised and a timber licence had been issued to one of Musa’s key logging cronies
Musa and Mannan even stand accused of altering the contours of Sabah’s forest maps in order to give the impression that hillsides are less steep than before, so that they can be logged!
In 2009 STAR President Dr Jeffrey Kittingen pointed out how certain steep areas had suddenly been re-designated into areas of less than 25% gradient so that logging licences could be issued. He called for this areas of 8,000 hectares of virgin forest to be preserved, but Musa has had it logged! [source - Sabakini]

Now these concerns and accusations have been corroborated by the mass of information detailing the millions of dollars which have been paid by the timber companies into bank accounts controlled by Musa Aman through his nominees Michael Chia and Richard Barnes in return for issuing such destructive licences.
Swathes of evidence has linked these accounts to Musa Aman and to logging interests who paid millions of dollars as stated “deposits for logging concessions”!
“Deposit for Logging Concession” made into a British Virgin Island company account from which regular payments were also made to Musa’s sons – just some of the evidence now available to Swiss Prosecutors
Although Musa has denied any business associations with Chia, the statements from these accounts make plain that money was paid from them on a regular basis to two of Musa’s own sons in Australia and to their guardian at the time Imbaring bin Bujang.
One of many payments, which have also been testified to in court by UBS own affidavits in Singapore
It is this mass of evidence that has been handed to the Swiss Authorities which has now prompted their launch of the criminal investigation into Musa and UBS.
Tainted host. UK papers are starting to wonder why Wills & Kate are being flown over to greet Sabah’s tainted Chief Minister?
The information has also been made available on this website following the refusal by Malaysia’s Attorney General (Musa’s relative) to prosecute after the MACC produced its own report recommending that 40 charges should be laid against the Chief Minister.
The British Foreign Office has nevertheless adopted the position that Musa should not be treated as guilty before proven in a court of law.
Yet the attitude represents a departure from another convention, which is that people who come under formal suspicion while holding public office should at least step aside until their name is cleared!
The chance to present the young couple as brave jungle warriors for audiences back home has clearly been judged too good to miss.  But, as the true situation emerges this meeting with Musa has started to look increasingly ill-judged.
Musa’s corruption is threatening to taint Britain’s as yet unsullied young royal couple.
