HSBC bars Taib family

 | April 27, 2014
Further controversy shrouds HSBC with latest developments on the bank's decision.

Taib-Logging-300x202.jpgKUCHING: Global banking conglomerate HSBC is  no longer doing business with former Chief Minister Taib Mahmud, his family,  cronies and possibly Sarawak.
In a  bid seen as being among several measure at  ‘damage control’, the bank has reportedly notified all members of Taib  family that they are no longer allowed to hold accounts with the bank.
The move comes on the back of a contentious decision to shutdown its commercial banking division in Sarawak which lead to a public outcry and protests by employees and the Sarawak Bank Employees Union.
HSBC’s decision here is closely linked to its desire to withdraw from ‘tainted’ active business.
The bank had reportedly said that its presence here is no longer commercially viable.
The argument has not gone down well with employees and the public as Sarawak’s economy is seeing considerable growth.
This is especially so following the establishment of the Sarawak Corridor for Renewable Energy (Score), which has boasted opportunities for foreign investments into the state.
The 150 HSBC Sarawak are demanding that Bank Negara intervene.
HSBC’s latest decision to bar Taib’s clan, was disclosed by online investigate portal Sarawak Report when it revealed that Taib’s daughter Raziah Mahmud and husband Robert Geneid had sold one of their family property in Australia for over A$6.5 million (RM14 mil).
The portal also raised questions over whether the sale was indicative of ‘other’ problems in the state backyard.
HSBC bankrolled Taib’s cronies
Taib stepped down as Sarawak Chief Minister on Feb 28 and is no  longer directing the administration of the state however  his successor Adenan Satem has been described by critics as being “nothing more than a puppet”.
The 31-year old Taib regime had come under heavy attack by international activists for a range of reportedly dictatorial and unlawful activities.
In 2012, a UK-based NGO Global Witness blew the lid off the Taib clan and their cronies’ dealings.
The revelations followed Swiss-based NGO Bruno Manser Fund’s disclosure that the Taib clan had  49 companies in eight countries worth billions of US dollars.
In contrast the oil,  gas and land rich state had been declared the third poorest in Malaysia.
BMF claimed the ‘source’ of Taib and his clan’s wealth came indirectly from logging the state.
HSBC had reportedly bankrolled errant logging companies in Sarawak.
criminal investigation by UK’s Serious Fraud Office (SFO) in 2012 showed that HSBC had violated its sustainability policies and earned around US$130 million (RM390mil) in the process.
The bank had  reportedly provided financial services to companies widely suspected of systematic bribery and corruption.
Sarawak exports more tropical timber than South America and Africa combined.
Politically connected clients
In its report “In the Future There Will B No Forest Left”  Global Witness revealed that HSBC had provided loans and financial services to conglomerates and companies linked to Taib.
HSBC’s clients were described as “politically exposed persons” (PEPs)
These clients, the report had further noted had also infiltrated into the global timber industry with the assistance of HSBC’s network.
The HSBC scandal in succession to BMF’s disclosure brought Taib’s crony companies, his unexplainable wealth and the depth of corruption in the state vis-a-vis Malaysia into global focus.
It also showed how Taib’s crony timber companies, which gained huge financial strength through their exploitation of Sarawak, had gone on to create global problems.

Malaysia cannot succeed unless equal opportunity given to non-Muslims, says Obama

BY JENNIFER GOMEZ

LATEST UPDATE: APRIL 27, 2014 09:18 PM

Malaysia must ensure non-Muslims in the country also have equal opportunites as its Muslim majority if the Southeast Asian nation wanted to continue prospering, United States President Barack Obama said today of his landmark visit, 48 years after the last American president paid a visit.
"Malaysia won't succeed if the non-Muslims do not have the same opportunity,” Obama said in a townhall meeting for Asean youths at Dewan Tunku Cancelor in University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur today.
Obama said non-Muslims in Malaysia are currently facing hostility, and some have felt oppressed.
And as you emerge as leaders, you should be on the side of politics that brings people together rather than drive them apart," Obama said to cheers from the crowd.
Obama said this today when answering a question from a Myanmar youth on factors of cooperation that can bring Asean together given its diversity.
He pointed out that the biggest source of conflict and war and hardship throughout the world was due to people treating those who were not like them differently.
He said the situation in Myanmar right now was that the country was going through a transition after decades of oppressive government, and it was now trying to open things up, which he said is to be lauded.
"However, the danger now that they are democratising, is that there will be groups inside Myanmar that might organise themselves politically around religious or ethnic identities instead of principles of justice or rule of law and democracy.
And you can actually see conflict that would move Myanmar in a bad direction," he said, adding that one of the problems in Myanmar was that the rights of its minority Muslim community were not protected.
Obama then added that the situation was not unique to Myanmar, and that in Malaysia, which had a majority Muslim population, there were instances where those who were not Muslims found themselves experiencing hostility.
He also said that even in the US, historically, the biggest conflicts arose around race, but over the course of generations the situation had improved, to the point that he could be elected as a president.
"All of us have within us biasness and prejudices against people who are not like us or people who are not raised in the same faith or come from different backgrounds, but the world is shrinking and getting smaller.
"You could think that way when living separately in villages and tribes and did not have contact with each other.
“But with the internet and smartphones, cultures all colliding, no country is going to succeed if part of its population is sidelined and being discriminated against," he added.
He then went on to say that similarly, Malaysia would also not succeed if non-Muslims were not given the opportunity, while the same would happen in Myanmar if the Muslim population was oppressed.
"Malaysia won't succeed if non-muslims don't have equal opportunity, Myanmar won’t succeed if the muslim population is oppressed.
"No society is going to succeed if half your population made up of women are not getting the same education and employment opportunities as men too," he added.
As such, he called on youths to embrace culture and be proud of who they were, while also appreciating differences in languages, food and how differently one worshipped God, adding that these were things to be proud of and not a tool to look down on a person.
He also called on the new generation to stand in "other people's shoes and look at things through their eyes".
Obama said that almost every religion teaches the basic principle of "do unto others as you want others to do unto you" and to "treat people the way you want to be treated".
"And if you are not doing that, then we are going backwards instead of going forward and this is true for all over the world," he told the 700-strong crowd of youths and civil society representatives. – April 27, 2014.

Chuck Pierce Prophesies 'Dragons Are On the Move'

Chuck Pierce
Chuck Pierce
Chuck Pierce released this prophetic word earlier this month:
"This is not the same as you've seen in the past. This is not the same as what you've asked for in other seasons. This is a different glory—a glory change that I'm bringing into the land! You will shudder at the changes that are on the way in your land and in other lands and with other people!
"For this is a time that the blood that runs deep will now be sanctified. This is a time that My Spirit will go deeper than I have gone in the past. For this is a time of birthing what is new, but yet bringing forth that which is old, and treasures will erupt! Treasures will erupt! Treasures will erupt!
"I will bring forth what has not been seen, and I will cause your gifts to come alive in ways they've never come alive. You will feel the shuddering birthing pains within you, and from that you will bring to birth the change that is necessary for you to enter into this season.
"So know this: Dragons are on the move, and even the Great Dragon is now mounting up. Nations that will align are now aligning. So watch carefully and look deep into the circumstances around you. For these are days of great change.
"Watch the signs on your road for your road is now changing. New opportunities are coming. Watch now, for I will realign your path!"
Charles D. "Chuck" Pierce serves as president of Global Spheres Inc. in Corinth, Texas, an apostolic, prophetic ministry that is being used to gather and mobilize the worshipping triumphant reserve throughout the world. He also serves as president of Glory of Zion International Ministries, a ministry that aligns Jew and Gentile. He is known for his accurate prophetic gifting that helps direct nations, cities, churches and individuals in understanding the times and seasons in which we live.

Three Dragon Storms
According to Airing News, "This is a really unusual weather situation, according to theNational Weather Service: Three low pressure systems in line over the entirety of North America. NASA Goddard describes them as 'three atmospheric dragons.'"

Extraordinary picture: Three dragon storms sweeping the US

This is a really unusual weather situation, according to the National Weather Service: Three low pressure systems in line over the entirety of North America. NASA Goddard describes them as "three atmospheric dragons." They do look like dragons! It must be a Game of Thrones'marketing ploy.
There are three low pressure systems around the U.S. and they resemble dragons on satellite imagery. NOAA's GOES-13 and GOES-15 satellite image from March 31 shows the low pressure systems in the eastern Pacific Ocean, over the nation's Heartland, and in the eastern Atlantic Ocean. All three lows have the signature comma shape that make them appear to be curled up dragons.
According to the National Weather Service, the low pressure area approaching the northwestern U.S. is expected to bring rainfall to the coast and areas of snow that stretch from western Washington state south toward the four corners region. The low in the middle of the country is located over Nebraska and dropping snow to the north and west of it. That same low is bringing rain from southern Minnesota south to eastern Texas. Meanwhile, the third low pressure system is bringing rain and snow to parts of New England.
Sadly, these dragons have teeth. They are bringing blizzards and mark the start of the tornado season (the first of which was spotted in Minnesota today).
Oh snap, if you hold the pic upside-down (everyone knows that is the way it looks from hell's point of view) they are the number of the beast (666)! It is a prophecy that the end is nigh!

Grief over Karpal reflects Malaysians’ affection for principled people

COMMENTARY BY THE MALAYSIAN INSIDER
APRIL 21, 2014
The crowd giving Karpal Singh a rousing farewell in George Town yesterday. – The Malaysian Insider pic by Hasnoor Hussain, April 21, 2014. The crowd giving Karpal Singh a rousing farewell in George Town yesterday. – The Malaysian Insider pic by Hasnoor Hussain, April 21, 2014.The late DAP leader Karpal Singh's funeral in Penang yesterday has been the biggest outpouring of grief in Malaysia since Tunku Abdul Rahman's funeral in December 1990.
The crowd lining the George Town roads yesterday roared the prominent lawyer and politician's name. Thousands others followed the cortege with Karpal's body to the Batu Gantung crematorium for his final journey.
Penang wept for its favourite son, Malaysia cried for the loss of an influential lawmaker, lawyer and leader.
In short, the main conclusion that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and his government can surmise from this outpouring of grief is simply this – Malaysians love their leaders and politicians who stand for something, to be men and women of principles.
It is not by accident that a multiracial crowd turned out, this was a politician who believed that everyone has a place under the Malaysian sun. Young, old – they were the people who have heard of Karpal Singh almost all their lives.
Everyone had a favourite tale to tell of the lawyer with the easy smile, the strong conviction and the sharp voice in court or Parliament – be they the hawkers in Green Hall or even his political foes in the Dewan Rakyat.
Perhaps some found themselves at the wrong end of the stick in Karpal's 45 years in law and politics but the turnout yesterday showed the affection that many had for the lawyer.
Will there be such a turnout for the likes of Datuk Zulkifli Noordin, DatukIbrahim Ali, Dr Ridhuan Tee Abdullah or other leaders from both sides of the divide that only speak on behalf of their race?
Malaysia is in need of heroes – of principled people. The Tiger of Jelutong was one of them.
And the crowds' lament for his loss reflects the need for more of such principled people to ensure equality and justice in Malaysia. – April 21, 2014.
